View Full Version : DXVA forces GPU to run at 405mhz instead of 50mhz

My graphics card on idle reduces the frequency to 50mhz and is very quiet. But when I open a video with DXVA it always runs at medium mhz state (405mhz), any ideas about how to make it run at 50mhz?
Power management is set to "Adaptive" in NVIDIA Control Panel.
The card - GTX580 reference design.
Video player - MPC-HC 1.6.0.4014 x64.

This is totally normal, all modern GPUs have many power states:
idle
idle multi-monitor (sometimes identical to "idle", sometimes not)
DXVA
3D mode
turbo 3D mode (introduced now with Kepler)
And it's that way for a reason - the GPU won't have enough processing power to decode the stream correctly if it's on lower clock frequency. So you'd better not mess with it.
Or you can use software (CPU-based) decoder ;).

You can enforce the Power state with the multi display power saver of the Nvidia Inspector.
But you'll have to use command line to workaround a reporting bug of GPU apps in the latest drivers.
P12 state may be fast enough for most but not for all videos.
You could replace your 580 with a 680, less power consumption in video mode and less heat in general. ;)
No need for such hacks then.

So you'd better not mess with it.When watching a FullHD DXVA video GPU usage is always 0-1% on ANY movie. Even on 30mbps+ bitrate movies like lord of the rings, switch, equilibrium, etc. But that's for 405mhz, can't make it run at 50mhz :(
It even runs counter-strike 1.6 on 50mhz state in 1920x1200 resolution with @100fps and GPU is only loaded for 1-5%. The same for quake3/quakelive: ultra stable 125 fps, 50mhz, 1-5% gpu usage.

Lack of processing power is not a problem for GTX580.You can enforce the Power state with the multi display power saver of the Nvidia Inspector.
