used to use tempeng which let me stretch to full screen but cce quality is better and easier, if i use 4.3/16.9 button on tv then it gets even smaller tried 4.3 and 16.9 setting in cce250 but same result is it possible to remove them..

is your tv a 4:3 or widescreen tv ?

Hi pcman,

as xrv1138 mentioned it is a very good idea to read this thread. And for further help it would be good to post if you have a 16:9 TV set or not (like xrv1138, i could not get it from your post either) and what aspect ratio your DVD is that you're trying to encode (e.g. 2.35:1, 1.85:1 or 4:3).

And something i haven't got also is the following: you said that you have tried the 4.3 and 16.9 setting in CCE , but you should have used the "Aspect ratio" dropdown in the "Conversion" tab and set it to "4:3" of dvd2svcd - did you? - Oh, btw. there is a little "glitch" in dvd2svcd, if you set an aspect ratio of 4:3 in the conversion tab and then you just click onto another tab dvd2svcd just reverts back to the aspect ratio it got from the *.IFO file (e.g. 16:9) so let the aspect ratio be the last setting you do right before you hit the "Go" button ;).

You can post your "AviSynth_Script_file.avs" here so we can see if it uses the "AddBorder" statement or not.

Greetings,
gerti67

@xrv1138: i read your edited posting and i think it was making sense as it could also be possible ;).

yes its 4.3 tv with 4.3/16.9 button which makes it worse

yes i know about the drop down aspect ratio which always reverts to 16.9 so i check before i hit go and even tried selecting 16.9 and revoving add borders from avs script

most of my movies are widescreen but my tv is 4.3 and svcd in widescreen looks terrible losing half of screen dont mind if its stretched a bit.

but as i said earlier i tried removing line add borders by selecting 16.9 and adding edit script then deleting add borders but still came out ultra narrow..
LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SV~1\MPEG2Dec\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("E:\mumret1\DVD2AV~1.D2V")
BilinearResize(480,432)
AddBorders(0,72,0,72)
ResampleAudio(44100)

Hi pcman,

now i got an idea of what you're trying to do ;).

If you remove the "AddBorder" statement (that's what dvd2svcd does when selecting 4:3 in aspect ratio dropdown) then you will sure loose the correct aspect ratio but as you said you don't mind.

For movies of an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 this will let the black bars disappear but not for movies that are 2.35:1.

So what you have to do is to "crop" the movie by cutting of the edges and loose some information with it. You can do that by inserting the "Crop" statement within the Avisynth script. (e.g. "Crop(4,0,352,240)") but as i'm not an expert in cropping (never done that before) this is just a starting point for you to do a search for "Crop" in the forum, visit the AviSynth website and read the script reference (http://www.math.berkeley.edu/~benrg/avisynth.html) or to wait for a more experienced user to give you some hints ;).

Greetings,
gerti67

Me again,

Edit your AviSynth script like this:

LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SV~1\MPEG2Dec\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("E:\mumret1\DVD2AV~1.D2V")
Crop(72,0,576,576)
BilinearResize(480,432)
ResampleAudio(44100)

But be aware you will loose some information with this. And i'm not totally sure if this is the right way (so some "crop" experts might help with it please ;))

Greetings,
gerti67

Ups! :o

I made a mistake. I forgot to change the height in the Resize.
So the script has to be like this, sorry pcman ;).

LoadPlugin("C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SV~1\MPEG2Dec\mpeg2dec.dll")
mpeg2source("E:\mumret1\DVD2AV~1.D2V")
Crop(72,0,576,576)
BilinearResize(480,576)
ResampleAudio(44100)

hmm
after thinking about this thread and re-reading the 16:9 4:3 thread i decided to have a play with an anamorphic svcd.
my tv and projector have widescreen options like pcman's.
seems i have no problems playing anamorphic svcds in correct aspect ratio on either of my systems.
so i spose i could have encoded using the 4:3 option from the beginning ;)

not going to tho
if i read the aspect ratio correctly, to get the same quality as i do now i would have to increase my max average bitrate by 33% for 1.85:1 dvds. as my present settings for cce stabilty preclude this i think ill just put off getting a widescreen tv indefinitley and stay with projector for movies (dont notice the black bars using that) :)

gerti67
9th February 2002, 16:50
Hi xrv1138,

i think you should do that (increase the bitrate) as from my short testing with the script the cropped MPEG looks worser (more noise, so i would prefer bilinear) than that with borders.

Also, i noticed some parts of the scene tend to "wobble" when the camera is moving or zooming. Perhaps this is related to the iDCT Algorithm (anybody knowing this ?) that has also to be more precise, just a guess ;).

thx for your help the cropping has certainly helped its reduced the black bars by half although they are still there about 25mm top and bottom tried incresing 72,0 to 82,0 but no difference or do i have to alter all figures also tried looking for help with cropping but no real help as yet at forum or avs webpage but still looking..

im going to avoid anamorphic svcds
cant increase my bitrates without harming my cce stability
and i certainly dont want to reduce my quality which im very happy with
just backed up saving private ryan, an apparently notorious dvd for average backup quality, and mine looks really nice
so
ill skip the widescreen tv and stay with projector
until plasma widescreens are cheap (as if that will ever happen)
then ill re-backup my dvds in anamorphic then

of course by then pcs will be so fast that dvd2svcd RT speeds will be about 10.5+ ;)
god know what version d2s will be up to by then
probably version 976234 build 23 which washes your laundry and cooks you dinner for you as well - tho only in beta testing of course :D

Hi pcman,

sorry to say but it seems i made another mistake! :o I didn't take into consideration the aspect ratio and just cropped the 72 pixel (that were to be added by the "AddBorder" statement) also from the left and the right, that is a mistake :( to keep the correct aspect ratio you have to crop 90 pixels from the left and the right side! So that the (now hopefully) correct statement should read:

=> "Crop(90,0,540,576)"

This will completely cut off the black borders of an 1.85:1 movie but keep in mind that you loose many information with that.

In your case, you probably have a 2.35:1 (or so) movie that will still have black borders when using the above command (as thick as a 1.85:1 movie on a 4:3 TV). If you want to crop of these borders, too, what i really can't recommend because you will loose a lot of picture information and visual quality suffers also, you have to use the following formula:

=> "Crop(90+x,0.8*x,540-2*x,576-1.6*x)" to keep the correct aspect ratio so that for x=30 it would read:

=> "Crop(120,24,480,528)"

So try it on your own and see if it satisfies your needs. But as i already said i just got into it (mainly for curiosity reasons) and i'm not an expert at this - so be aware there still can be mistakes in these calculations and thoughts. ;)

Greetings,
gerti67

P.S. @xrv1138: what about realtime speech analysis, -translation and -synthesis, so that dvd2svcd could translate any language into another, what would sure help with some people complaining about subtitles not working for them :D - Sorry, dvd2svcd - just kidding, i really appreciate your great work.
