I have done some searches and they have just left me confused, so I apologize if this has been asked before. I am going to start ripping some of my old hd dvds using any dvd and my xbox 360 drive. My question is, can bd rebuilder then build these files to bd structure and burn to a bdr? If so, do I just choose that file and let bd rebuilder do its thing, or is it more involved and would it require me to dowload more programs? I am just a bit worried about throwing things into the mix that may screw up my as of yet seemless functionality of bd rebuilder. Thanks..

I know NOTHING about HD-DVD, but I imagine that the format is different from bluray, otherwise there wouldn't have been that war between the two formats some years ago. Presuming that that is correct, I would imagine that there is no way that this is going to work with BDRB unless JDobbs has intentionally built-in that capability.

But, since you have BDRB, and some HD-DVD discs, and a way to rip them to the HD, why don't you just try pointing BDRB to the ripped folders and see what happens. I imagine that you might get an error message about the folders not being in Bluray format.

Thats what I was planning on trying, but I haven't hooked up the drive to the computer yet. It is still set up in the other room where my xbox is. I was hoping to hear that bd rebuilder would work and give me some motivation to hook it up to the computer.

BD-RB will not work with HD-DVD files. You could try this:

thanks. I actually did fnd that thread, but found that much of it was outdated. I have found that clown bd works, but I am wondering if there will be any problems having both installed at the same time since they use some of the same programs in the background?

AVCHDCoder will accept a .ts file, as well as many other formats, and can convert it to any size AVCHD (Blu-Ray). It uses X264 encoder and the results are excellent. Can even do menus and intro music. Not as versatile as BDRD but the results are typical X264 excellence. It's free.

@chadsmith

Hi!

I think you'll find it much easier and simpler to do the following in order to convert your ripped/decrypted HD-DVDs to BluRay:

1) Open tsMuxeR GUI
2) Click on the "Join" radiobutton and select the first "Feature".EVO. Repeat for each consecutive "Feature".EVO (usually just one more. Almost all HD-DVDs have the main movie comprised of two "Feature" .EVOs
3) Select "BluRay" at the bottom of the window.
4) Click the "Start Muxing" radiobutton

I think there is a sticky or so on how to convert HD-DVDs to Blu-rays. Once you had them in BD format, you can use, if you still need, BD-rebuilder upon it (I mean you could have removed the not-needed tracks in the process of converting). In the end, a HD-DVD double layer is just a lil'bit bigger than a BD-R 25 so you may not need BD-RB at all ....

You have a good point there. I hooked it up last night but unfortunately it seems these damn hddvd or so susceptable to scratches that the first two I tried got hung up on any dvd. I finally did get one iso to copy over to my hard drive (took forever..only about 5mbps ) so I am not sure this project is going to get off the ground for me or not. I am going see of the first two disks were a fluke or if I am going to have a problem with a majority of them. I remember being mad when hdhdvd first lost the war, now I am glad as these disks dontseem to hold up too well.

I just realized that the power dvd 9 I have does not play hd dvd. Are there any free progrmas that will play an hd dvd? I dont want to pay for power dvd 7 just to play my hd dvds.

I found Clown_BD to be the easiest solution for converting HD-DVDs to either BD or DVD. It lives quite happily along with my BD-RB installation. I have only converted main features - not extras. And I do not believe there is any way to convert HD-DVD menus to BD.

Thanks, that is what I ended up doing. Works fine. Did you find that a lot of your old hddvds would not play in your drive? (mine being the xbox drive). Even some of the ones w/o a scratch on them are not making it through the any dvd process. Dissapointing. Do you have the dd+ converted to lpcm or dts in clown bd? It seems dts should maintain the same quality since it has the same bitrate, but I have read there is some degraded quality. Sorry to move off the bd rebuilder track here, was just wondering since you have some experience with this.

If your problematic HD-DVD titles are Warner, they were probably manufactured by cinram and subject to their quality control problems and issues. I had a number of defective Warner titles, and got Warner to replace them all with blu-rays.
I let Clown-BD convert DD+ to standard regular lossy DD. I really only started playing around with this to convert a particular HD-DVD to regular DVD to use in a standard player.

Hey Rick or Chad, I was wondering if you could post a detailed discription on how you ripped the HD-DVDs using Clown_BD. I have not been able to get it to finish....its get to 100% and then nothing is there. Am I using the right Clown_BD product? I saw that there were several different ones to download. Here is what I am trying to do.....I have several HD-DVDs that are collecting dust so the shelf so I want to rip them and then pack them away. I figured I could rip them to around a 2 gb avi file but I cannot find a program that gives me that option. Currently I am trying to use MAKEMKV to turn the .evo files into one 14 gb MKV and them I am using AVS video converting to convert to AVI. If Clown_BD can do it better I would really like to know how to use it. Thanks for the help

You might peruse this thread . . .
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134227&page=19
do some experimenting . . and then put questions into the referenced thread (that's what I did & got great assistance).

Thanks I'll try that. On a side note...do you guys know of any video player that still plays HD-DVDs (EVO files). I can't find any.

You really should just convert them to Blu-ray and then toss them. No one is spending any effort in HD-DVD because it's a dead format. You might just as well be looking for a betamax player...

I seem to recall that PowerDVD7 Ultra supported HD-DVD playback, as well as the initial release of PowerDVD 8, but there was a mod you had to make to reactivate support in the program because the manufacturer disabled it when Toshiba threw in the towel. You'll have to do some research on this.

Well, the one that I downloaded had all of the programs needed for clown bd to run. There are like 3 or 4 other programs in there. You probably just downloaded the file with clown bd only. If you go back to the site you will find the one with the other files. After that, you just use the ripped file out of any dvd and let it run. Only takes about 45 or so for my computer. You could then use bd rebuilder to reencode it to a smaller size using whatever target size you want, though 2gb seems a bit small and likely won't look very good. I would stick with at least a bd5 size.
