new to video editing

i have a video, own by me. For business purpose I want to do a few things. However, I am a complete newbie.

What I want to do

a big black square appears in the middle of the video when it plays to some point, showing my text about my websites, advestisement etc. While the viewer can still see the video playing, but the main part of it got covered by the black square. (or any other colour)

How to make this effect?

Any easier software ? Thanks you

not a freeware. Try corel video studio it give 30day full functional trial.

Look into Photodex ProShow Producer (http://www.photodex.com/proshow/producer).
Not free but very good for these types of things.

And try to avoid annoying.
A running line of text on half transparent background should suffice...
