I want to make a VC-1 dvd that can play on my blu-ray player.

I tested X264 on Megui to create a so called "BD5" (it plays on my standalone BD player) and it takes 20hours to encode a 2hours video on my setup. While it only takes 14 when I use WMV9 (with windows media encoder) and the quality difference is negligible in my eyes.

I googled and it seems that everyone uses H264 to do this but no one use VC-1. The question is, How can I encode a Blu-ray compliant VC-1 video using free tools? (I downloaded Expression Encoder 4 and there is no "Blu-ray" preset...) And it is playable on my standalone player if I burn that Video to DVD? (using BD file structure)

I don't use too much re-encodings, but you can try it on a DVD-RW to see if it works. The - is very important.
VC-1 definitively works on DVDRs if authored as Blu-rays (not as AVCHD discs), however there are some players (in particular the Panasonics) that if detect a DVDR they'll accept only the pure AVCHD format (H.264, AC-3 audio, no subtitles, no multi-audio etc. etc.).

Thanks again. I download that and find that I need a GUI for that SDK to really do the encode. I find VC123.zip in the forum but the link is already dead...
It is possible that I just use this "Expression Encoder 4" to do the job?

why don't you just use faster x264 profile??? select very fast if your pc has ancient cpu.

I'm not at Microsoft anymore, but I'm got an email in around about VC123.

I imagine there's a way to get EEv4 to do this with a reg key or XML editing, but I'm sure no one tested the output through a verifier.

This seems like a cool idea for old times sake for me, but I agree that using x264 will be MUCH easier and provide results at least as good.

Thanks, And I tested with x264 faster preset but since I am encoding some fast-changing scene. There are too many block noise (or too blurry with deblocking)
So I still prefer VC-1 standard preset if it is feasible.

Then be sure your player accepts VC-1 on DVDRs.

As for the poorly-named application "AVS2ASF"...

... well, the modification by TinTime still is the least-unusable one :p

Especifically, it still is asking for:

--- improve or remove the weird NTSC-D1~to~1024x576 "patch" ;

--- allow the "adaptiveGOP" feature to be turned off ;

--- restore the simple and main profiles ;

--- add an AVI :devil: muxer (since the ASF container is not B-frame~compatible neither)

--- drop the WMA encoding entirely ;

--- ensure that NO "BI" frames will ever be generated when "B-frames == 0" ;)

--- etc, etc, whatever :)
