Vlc 2.0 x264 rendering

Was wondering if anyone knows why the x264 rendering is not up to scratch. I had made a DVD rip of red riding hood mkv x264 video and AAC audio. I used latest x264 in megui to create file.

In scenes with trees or the wind and snow you get lots of block artefacts . I initially thought it wast encode so I redid it with one pass quality 17. Still with this high quality rip the artefacts remain.

In mpc or umplayer however I get a perfect quality viewing. This was on windows xp.

However the block artefacts are far more pronounced in ver 2.0 than the were in the 1.x series.

Maybe it's just a bug and a bug report would be best.

Definitely sounds like a decoding bug.

However this might be because VLC 2.0 now uses hardware decoding and the hardware decoder (or video driver!) fails :rolleyes:

Turn off hardware decoding in VLC, so the software decoder (libavcodec!) is used again...

Actually resolved this (not for vlc) I removed my current codecs and installed shark007 codec pack. Now in WMP and MPC I got perfect X264.

i have the video glitches, i also have the video going jerky and out of sync sometimes. How do i disable hardware decoding in vlc, i've just looked but can't find a setting.

Go to:
Tools >> Preferences... >> Video

And untick "Accelerated video output". Press "Save" and try a video.

I've noticed video "jitters" between 1.1.9 and 2.0.0. I use Windows 7 Ultimate with Aero active. I discovered leaving the Accelerated (Overlay) and Hardware settings active, but changing the Video Output to DirectX (DirectDraw) solves a challenge. Then, when VLC plays, Aero is being disabled and "Windows 7 color scheme is being changed to Basic". No more video jitters via VLC 2.0.0 (Have yet to try with history versions); even when skipping to different places in an MKV video.

I use BD-RB (Beta) to create the Blu-Ray Backups that I'm using with VLC. I use SUP and SRT's in my MKV containers. I use both because some movies I want to further render for my iPad 2, and from .mkv to .m4v or .mp4 is much "quicker" than rerendering my movies again. Hehe. In case someone wonders why Both Subtitles (Closed Captions) are being used.

Anyway, I love how well VLC operates for DVDs, and video files (Including HD)...so noticing this, I share this info so others may enjoy this as well....it's a nice "tweak" for a possible bug in VLC. I give nothing the power to annoy me and it would be nice for Aero to remain active, and until that changes.... Aero is reactived after VLC exists. SUP and SRT are easily switchable then, and no jitters...with my machine. MPC Home Cinema (64-bit) 1.5.2.3456 doesn't (yet) resume displaying SUP files if I switch to SRT then switch again to SUP.

2 great players, I feel. :D I have a 4 Core system & 6GB of RAM and 5700 RPM hard drives with an XFX ATI 5750 graphics board. No lack in power..for those that may wonder about the hardware.

I Am open to suggestions other than changing the Video Preference to DirectX (DirectDraw). Thanks a lot.
