LG DVD writer won't recognize DVD-R

Bought a new pc (i5-2300 CPU) about 6 months ago and put an LG GH24NS70 writer in it. I've always used DVD-R with my other pc but this set up will not accept these (won't recognize the cd), I've tried Sony and Maxell so far.
DVD+RW works. Anybody else out there also having trouble with DVD-R?:thanks:

I'd be willing to speculate it's a problem with the drive itself. I can't see any other hardware/software in a PC having an effect on a drive's ability to recognize a certain type of disc. What about DVD-R discs you've already burned?

Which program for burning?
Imgburn, nero,etc,......
(won't recognize the cd)
cd = dvd ?
Try unistalling the dvd burner via devicemanager.
Reboot and verify the spti driver is used after the fresh install.
Make sure no other burning program interfers with its own drivers.
Imgburn has a nice interface to check all culprits and more :p:D

Did you update the firmware?

hello_hello: Strangely enough, I can play burnt DVD-R from Fuji, Sony. Kokak shows menus and chapters but won't play, green light starts flickering fast and writer freezes. It seems that it won't recognize the blank DVD-R.

Taurus. I uninstalled the dvd burner and re-booted, the burner is now re-installed. How to check this "spti driver"? The firmware is up to date I think, doesn't look like LG made any updates after the original. I indeed have imgburn installed already. Not sure how to check "all culprits" though. I am using mostly ConvertX to DVD for burning. On my other pc I was using mostly Nero with WXP but this LG burner doesn't "like" Nero with W7.

In Imageburn go to tools/filter driver load order.
On WinXp there should be only the CD/DVD-Rom Device and the upper device filter "redbook"
On Win7 nothing, just CD/DVD-Rom Device.
You can uninstall drivers from this menu.
But be careful.
If "ConvertX to DVD" is using it's own drivers, sorry you will loose it if you disable it from Imgburn.
You have to install the program again
And Imgburn/settings/I/O/SPTI - Microsoft should be enough.
But as Ghitulescu and hello_hello mentioned:
It's probably a hardware failure.
