Is there any reason to avoid mod 2 these days? I plan to encode some material in 480p (854x480) and am wondering if there are any modern devices or players out there that don't support it.
I suppose I could always go something smaller at mod 16/8/4, but I'd prefer the full 480p unless it could possibly create other problems.

May I remember you to forum rule #9 ;)
Also the "overhead" for encoding at non-mod 16 with x264 (if that is what you are going to use) is nothing you should worry about...
(And, as the "cropping flags" are defined in the H.264 standard, any decoder is supposed to support them)

Not concerned with overhead or the slight loss of compression, only with compatibility issues if there are any I'm not aware of. Thanks Mulder :)

There were some issues (not fatal) if ffdshow was combined with vsfilter, but those seem to be finally fixed as of now.
Hmm, since you explicitly mention 854x480: 1) why not use anamorphic encoding instead. 2) If you are starting with DVD source, the proper "16:9" resolution might be quite a bit different than you expect. My source is not anamorphic, rather square pixels. 480p is the intended device's native resolution.
