I have the extended version of Lord of the rings. each movie spans 2 DVDS. I want to watch them on my ipad as such i want to use mp4 format. How can I combine the 2 files into 1 big mp4 file?

I've tried various tools like mkvtools/mp4tools, mpeg streamer (can combine stuff but only for quicktime movie format output).

thank you

Try YAMB (http://yamb.unite-video.com/). If memory serves me correctly a lot of people have had audio sync issues with the second half when trying to append the two segments together (the video and audio tracks are slightly different lengths, I think). I know I did after converting each DVD to AVI and then trying to append them using VirtualDubMod, but when I later converted them to MKV, MKVMerge appended them without messing up the audio sync.

Anyway, I'm sure YAMB will append files so see how you go. How large are they? I rarely work with MP4 files but don't they have a 4GB size limit or am I just remembering wrong?
