I bought the Pro version several years ago. My question is what happens if Mr. Dobbs (God Forbid) suddenly was unable to reset the computer ids for installing/reinstalling on a reformatted hdd again? I do alot of reformatting from scratch and it ALWAYS changes my pc ID. One time I had to wait some time for his return to get it reset to use it again. What if the mechanisim for issuing a new Key was destroyed somehow? How would I be able to continue to get a new Key? Is there an emergency backup plan to make sure I will always be able to get a new Key (no matter how many times I reformat my pc)?
I have had this nagging at me for some time because I wondered what would happen if the Govt. or some other entity shut down the internet entirely. How would I be able to continue to get a new Key file in such an event? Wouldn't I pretty much be royally screwed?

And what if the world ends on Dec. 21, 2012 like the Mayan calender predicts. What if... What if... What if... Really man, don't you have other things to worry about. "if the Govt. or some other entity shut down the internet entirely..." Yeah, then you're totally screwed. Deal with it.

Hmm... "I bought the Pro version several years ago" speaks for itself. You bought it several years ago and you are still successfully downloading the key. If you're asking for a server that never goes down or needs maintenance I'd have to say you're not going to find one on this planet. But my key server is probably somewhere in the 99.99% uptime category.

As for my demise... I'm working ardently to ensure that doesn't happen anytime soon. I've compiled a "no key" version -- so I guess I could lock it in a vault somewhere and put its release in my will. But it's likely I will simply release it someday -- or, more probably, I'll simply outlast DVDs as a popular media and by then nobody will care anymore.

Hopefully people will start donating to BD Rebuilder -- and it will never need a "Pro" version.

The sarcastic attitude was unnecessary and shows a lack of maturity (I hope you grow up in the future). Thank you Mr. Dobbs for the decent reply. I am retired and cannot afford to spend money like a drunken sailor when I have children that need it for College and basic necessities. I reformat my pcs ( I have 4 desktops and 2 laptops I have had forever) and reformat them probably at least 2 times a year. I asked a simple question since I am neither a millionaire nor the son of a senator. I never intend to go Blue Ray for reasons already stated.

This is getting off topic, but anyway.. Why not use the clone trick the next time you start from scratch. That is, install the OS + updates and all the tools that you will always have installed. Then create a clone image of the drive, you can later use it to start from scratch in much less time and work and do not need to worry about the key. There are many free tools for this job.

Tax returns are coming up Jdobbs. I at the very least will be feeling generous. Besides, the ongoing support of bd-rebuilder is very important to me.

I created a clone once upon a time. I had to re-key dvd rebuilder. It was one of few programs that didn't survive the cloning process.

I just reinstalled a new C: drive recently using a cloning process -- and didn't have to change my ID. But even if you do have to change it -- the complete connect-download-register sequence takes about 1 second. I don't see that as a major issue.

Neither do I. I was just saying LOL! Perhaps it had something to do with shrinking the sectors. I cloned from a 1Tb drive, to a 150Gb velociraptor. Ah well though. As you say, NOT a big deal ;)

Thanks Omega. I do continually revise/update programs on my PCs and do create backups (which I have learned how to do now). I have not tried to clone anything. After I backed up my pc (when I went to transfer the backup onto one of my other pcs, it lost the KEY ability and I had to get the key again). I don't always have internet access and sometimes I have no internet for months at a time (which was another concern of mine and is why I was asking this question also). About awhile ago I had no internet for almost 7 months. It usually averages about 2 months to 6 months, but one time I didn't have it for just over a year. Needless to say I was glad I didn't reformat ALL my Pcs then as I had one that was left unchanged and didn't need to get a new Key. I guess it's no big deal if you always have internet access, but some of us don't always have it. I hope that will be a consideration for us less fortunate to always be able to get a key. Thank You.

Cloning my drive worked fine for me.. no need to re-register DVD-RB.
After years of reinstalling the OS by disc, spending hours to just install the drivers and windows updates to get back to "where I was", I now just use a small, older hard drive to keep a clone of a fresh, pristine install. ( used Acronis ! ) This saves so much time, only takes approximately 15 minutes, with no need to install all those necessary drivers and register Windows again with Microsoft! ;)
Sorry to get off topic.. :(

I can't download the Key now after reformatting my pc again. I keep getting the message "Exceeded" ID Limit.......
This is the pro version which I bought. I hope this isn't a retaliation for my earlier question. I tried the Offline method also (Which didn't work). By installing it again on one of my other desktops and copying the ID number from the other pc in order to transfer the key to it from this one...No go. I was afraid of this very thing from happening...:(

You ran out of keys (5 concurrent). I reset it and you should be good-to-go...
