Blu Ray ripping to my toshiba thrive

Hello all,

Been looking at this website for several months now and finally decided to get registered and start asking my own questions.

So I received a Toshiba thrive foe Christmas and was wanting to start ripping some of my DVDs and blue rays onto it. I've found a program that will put the DVDs on the thrive but no clue about the blue rays. Anybody have any suggestions?

I also was wondering if there was a way to get digital copies of movies onto the thrive as well. I got one drug onto it but it says the movie could not be played.

I'm pretty new at this tablet stuff so go easy on me.

Chances are the digital copies of movies have DRM that the "thrive" can't unlock.

Normally you'd rip a DVD or Bluray to your PC's hard drive, then convert it to MP4 of MKV (I pretty sure the Thrive supports MP4 but I'm not sure about MKV).

There's a free version of DVDFab which will remove the copy protection on DVDs and (I think) rip them to your computer (I'm not sure about Bluray), or there's AnyDVD which works with both DVD and Bluray although I don't think there's a free version. Other posters may know of other programs.

Once the DVD/Bluray is ripped to your hard drive (or if you run AnyDVD in the background you should be able to work directly from the disc) then it needs to be converted. There's many free programs which will do the job. You'd normally convert using x264 for video and AAC for audio (although depending on the formats the Thrive supports you may be able to keep the original audio track).

It's fairly hard to explain the whole process in a single post but it can be hard to know where to get started. While I don't own a tablet I use a program called MeGUI for all my converting and AnyDVD to remove the copy protection in order for MeGUI to be able to extract the audio and video from the disc (either DVD or Bluray) in order to convert it. HDConvertToX and Ripbot are similar conversion programs which have less daunting interfaces. They're all free. Handbrake is also a popular choice.

Once you pick a program (and unless anyone knows of a free alternative you may have to buy AnyDVD to remove the copy protection from Bluray discs), have a play and if you have problems there's a forum here for asking questions. Most of the free programs also have guides for using them floating around the internet. If not here then just try a search with google for a guide. And of course if you still have general questions, ask them. I'm sure someone will offer a beginner a little more help than telling you the info's already here.

There's also other types of free programs which aim to make converting more of a "one click" process, in so much as you open your ripped files, select a target output type and size and let the program do it's thing. FormatFactory and AnyVideoConverter come to mind. I'm not sure though if there's any free programs which will work directly with a copy protected disc.

PS. It'd also be handy to know if there's any encoder restrictions required when encoding for the Thrive. H264 profile, that sort of thing. The manual might tell you.
