Help me get the halos corrected

So I've got a mpeg2 footage, which has insane amount of erm,...halo. Did a quick googling and found this one : Dehalo_Alpha, yet the result didn't please me much. I really need some more effective methods to wipe out the artifacts, or at least, make them less visible. Here are two frames that illustrate the problem, both processed with tfm(pp=0)
