Hello, i just bought a 1090T and i must have some drivers problems because i see weird things.

Could someone tell me how many fps i should get in Blue ray to 720p conversion?

Please specify:

- Preset
- 1st or 2nd pass and crf value

You don't even tell us what encoder software you are using, but I assume you are referring to x264. Still, what input chain and what filters (if any) do you use?

Also, as the encoding speed greatly depends on the encoder settings and as there is an infinite amount of possible combinations, it would be easier to say what settings exactly you are using.

If you give all the required info, then we will probably be able to tell whether you encoding performance is in the "expected" range or not.

Last but not least: If you think encoding performance is too low, make sure you are using the latest build of x264. If in doubt, try the latest build from here: http://x264.nl/.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, i use x264. I only use Lanzcos4 for resizing to 720p. Well, i usually use preset slow + 6 b-frames and tune film and deblock -3-3, or the same plus subme 9. I am using the latest build, but the GUI is old... (asx GUI). And i am seeing weird things because of that or my motherboard drivers have something odd going on. I did one encode and i got 5 fps on 2nd pass with subme9, while my older AMD 605e would usually be around 7 at those settings... I am going to give RipBot a try now...

I'm running a 1055T @ 4.0 Ghz.

x264 --preset slow --deblock -3:-3 --bframes 6 --subme 9 --tune film -o nul
That's for a 1280x720 video (resized via Lanczos4 from a 1080p h.264 Blu-Ray) and I'm running between 18-20 FPS. All is done in 64 bit workflow with GPU decoding the source.

You shouldn't be seeing less than 15 FPS though, IMO.

Thank you very much Linyx! It's more or less in line with what i was suspecting. There is something wrong with my system (and asxGUI). Troubleshooting time. Thanks again. At least now i know what's the "normality" i should seek for.

Well, i 've tried everything (BIOS, drivers, reinstalling Windows, changing motherboard (both AM2+ 780g), not applying windows update, changing codec packs), running 2 instead of 4 RAM sticks, but it seems that a) either i have a defective 1090t or b) the 1090t gets bottlenecked by my DDR2 800Mhz RAM (8GB).

The encoding starts well, at 15+ fps. Then after a while, it starts a repeating pattern where fps drops much and then tries to go up again, then drops again and so on. Encoding fps look like this (i tried AsxGUI, VidCoder and Ripbot): 16,15,17,9,3,1,8,12,14,7,3,9,11,14,13,8,5,4,1,7,12,15. It's like as if every few seconds, there is a bottleneck forcing the CPU to slow down,although the task manager shows 100% use.

At the end, the average fps drops and drops and drops to 6-8 fps, depending on settings. Moreover, if while encoding i want to watch an HD film, i get stuttering. Oddly enough, the 1st pass has no such problem, it has steady fps (easily over 20fps even with 6 b frames).

I am exhausted in trying to find out what else could possibly be. I am not sure whether to RMA the CPU or whether it's motherboard/RAM issue bottlenecking the CPU (the RAM itself is fine). Now i am back at running my old Athlon II, much less fps, but all is smooth as silk.

I am so unlucky...

Perhaps your CPU gets throttled down because of overheating. Check temperatures and cooling.

I don't think so. I always run Speedfan on tray and socket temp is below 48C (i have a good cooler) and core temps are like 10C lower than that. I don't overclock it at all. Stock 3200Mhz.

But...Maybe i should try disabling CPU throttle in BIOS? Now it's on "auto"...hmmm. Yet, i don't see it throttled in CPU-Z when it happens.

Hardly, in 1st pass total CPU usage is like 50-60%. In the 2nd pass all cores are close to 100% when this happens.

I also tried using older chipset drivers, putting the source video file in the primary disk (instead of the 2nd HDD), changing from SATA to IDE mode for HDDs, nothing. It's as if the flow of data to the CPU is overloaded so the encode must drop until new data arrives. then continue, then drop again and so on. But CPU keeps 100%. It's insane. I tried even loosening RAM timings, nothing. I am hesitant to RMA the CPU because CPUs are rarely faulty and the weirdest thing is that in Techarp x264 benchmark, i get the normal fps for a 1090T!!! But when it comes to a real encoding, all goes bad. Plus, per shop policy, i have to play the shipping and if the CPU turns out not to be faulty, i have to pay 25 euros for "unnecessary support" and the shipping fees for getting back the CPU... So i will end up paying something like 50 euros for nothing.

Try disabling all the throttling options in BIOS. Which motherboards and BIOS versions did you try? How about motherboard temperatures?

I tried Asrock A790GMH/128M and Asrock A780GXH/128M, both with latest BIOS. I also emailed them for support but haven't seen a reply. They probably think i am imagining things... I may be a newbie in x264, but i am not so newbie on PCs. I build my own PCs for years now...

Motherboard stays at 40-42C. Weather is pretty cold here this time of year. Even on summer i was keeping it at 45C. I just found a thread with ASUS users having throttling which sets in automatically if VRM/Mofsets overheat

But i doubt it's my problem, i have a top flow cooler (Scythe Rasetsu), which blows air downwards, so it should cool the mofsets too. Anyway, i have a wireless Scythe IR thermometer too, in a few hours i will put back the 1090T and see what temps the thermometer measures at the mofsets. I will try to disable the throttling too and see what happens. I WISH it's just an overheating issue only. I have an Antec SpotCool sitting on its box, if needed i can install it and make it blow right on the mofsets.

I don't know about your motherboards, but this may be worth looking at:
Some top-level AM3 processors (x945 125W, x955 and x965) require a special power-supply feature, often called "dual power-plane". It's supported by default in all native AM3 mainboards, however not in most AM2+ mainboards, even those advertised as "AM3 optimised" or "AM3 ready". Processor running below its nominal speed (i.e. at 800 MHz), clock and multiplier locked are symptoms of this incompatibility. This is caused by the processor itself: when it detects that the motherboard does not supply dual power planes, the chip locks its multiplier to 4x. This issue is not resolvable via BIOS update; however, users of AM2 and AM2+ motherboards can still use Phenom II processors excluding the 125 watt variants.

Also, I advise disabling Turbo Core unless you have a specific reason to use it.

Thanks about that, fortunately it's not an issue with my motherboards (they officially support 125W Thuban with no issues), but, thanks to "NM" i did find the culprit. It's in deed the "CPU Throttling" in BIOS. I disabled it and now i get stable about 13,5 fps average, which is x2 of what my Athlon II@2300Mhz is usually giving.

The odd thing is that CPU-Z shows no drop in frequency. But somehow the throttling occurs, maybe dropping voltage? I don't know. I also measured the temp of the mofsets and it's 68C , which shouldn't trigger any throttling, since most of the time these are certified for over 150C temperature. So the CPU isn't overheating, the mofsets aren't overheating, why is the CPU throttling kicking in and without reducing the CPU frequency??? Only Asrock knows. Probably a half-baked BIOS.

Anyway, i don't overclock, so i think i shouldn't worry about the motherboard going "boom" like many MSI boards did.

About disabling Turbo Core, i do it, but unfortunately Asrock has some weird BIOS. If i disable it in BIOS, then Cool N Quiet gets disabled too and Windows Event Viewer is filled with warning that a CPU function is disabled. But i kinda cheat the system, disabling turbocore within Windows using K10Stat, which seems to work (i really hate turbocore).
