Hey all I had a Bluray drive in my laptop but lately I couldn't recognize newer bluray discs then I quit working all together. I'm not looking to burn anything but I'd like a drive to put in my new tower. I just want the ability to back them up on my harddrive so I can leave the original in its case. I've been seeing two things online reading BD+ discs and riplock? What drive would you recommend? I was looking at this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151222

TigerDirect has a Lite-On internal Blu-Ray burner for $69.99 US, which is $15 LESS than the only Blu-Ray read-only drive they carry.

The Lite-On I got from TigerDirect about a year ago has no issues with RipLock.

Would you possibly have a link for that? =) I plan on purchasing SlySofts AnyDVD and this drive or does anyone recommend anything else?

LiteOns BD-burners are not really that good, they look even cheaper than their latest DVD-burners, and reports are that they don't burn as reliable as their main competitors in that price range, the LGs. Sony rebadges Liteons, Pioneer rebadges LGs. The laptops from Sony (VAIO) usually have Panasonic/Matsushita drives.

If you want a BD-drive (only for reading) then pick up a LiteOn. They are cheap and they support quality testing.

I only brought up the burner I saw on TigerDirect because for a few extra bucks over what you first linked you'd have a burner if you decided to try it.

CWR03, I meant no offense I simply was curious what he would recommend over yours and why. having the ability to burn never hurts.

So I repeat myself:
LiteOns BD-burners are not really that good, they look even cheaper than their latest DVD-burners, and reports are that they don't burn as reliable as their main competitors in that price range, the LGs. Sony rebadges Liteons, Pioneer rebadges LGs. The laptops from Sony (VAIO) usually have Panasonic/Matsushita drives.

If you want a BD-drive (only for reading) then pick up a LiteOn. They are cheap and they support quality testing.
If you need a reader get a LiteOn, they are cheap (in case they break you won't loose too much money) and they support QC (eg with DiskSpeed or kProbe2).
If you need a burner get the Matsushita (very expensive) or a Pioneer (again very expensive, cheaper/newer models are made by LG).
LG is moderated/cheap priced at a quite good quality (they are the OEMs for new Plextors, new Sonies, new Pioneers, new Buffaloes etc. so their qualities must not be underestimated - before all these brands rebadged Panasonic/Pioneer).

Regular updates of the FW could improve the burning qualities, as new/better strategies may be added (eg for the newer generations of BDRs).

Make a list and balance all the options before buying.

I was not offended, I was pointing out that your question had already been answered.

Oh jeez I totally misread that. Sorry long hours and no sleep don't mix. Thanks both of you for the help. I'm gonna go for the LiteOn make sure my computer can handle this before I invest to much.
