View Full Version : Black strip in ripped DVD (with Thoggen)

Hi,

I tried to rip a DVD on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) using Thoggen to get a backup in Theora format. It worked fine, except that throughout the movie I've got a vertical black strip over the image.

Has anyone seen that before? Is this a problem with the ripper, or a kind of "poor man's copy protection scheme" with defect data that still plays fine on DVD players but produces that strip on the PC?

What can I do to get a correct backup? The DVD in question is not encrypted or copy protected otherwise, since it's a film a "semi-professional" made for us from an event we organized.

Thanks a lot!

Daniel

It can only come with the encoding.

I just tried re-encoding with different settings (different target output size in Thoggen), and the strip disappeared. So Ghitulescu was probably right and the problem lied with the encoder.

Sorry for the confusion, but I had never seen such a problem appear before!
