View Full Version : Rise of the Planet Of the Apes menu "issue"

Here's the deal, i've got this movie and the box cover doesnt list any special features. However the weird thing is that BDRB DOES see special features. Like interviews with director, how they create a scene with a motion capture and then superimpose the ape with it. The thing is that the menu that's on the disc has NO WAY of accessing the bonus features.
Can this be modified by simply swapping mpls files or something.
Sorry if this is the wrong place but didnt know where else to put it, as PowerDVD can't access them, nor can VSO media player, nor can MPC-HC (well that one doesnt show a menu at all. directly jumpst to 00600.mpls wich is the feature) but BDRB does see them.

This type of disc is what is available at the rental stores, for purchase as "previously viewed" and not the retail version that you can purchase. :(
You could use multiAVCHD to "create" your own custom Blu-ray, adding these available titles from the disc, but there is not going to be a way to access the special features through the original menu. :cool:

@Ch3vr0n
You might want to learn JAVA programming ;>} - or purchase the fullblown version of the disc when it's released. I rather doubt that you (or I) would be able to access things such as the PIP activity of such discs, or Universal's "U-Control", etc.
BTW - It's ironic that you'd post about this the day after my post at:

lol, what a coincidence. Though ROTPOTA doesnt have cinavia though. The thing is i'm on a very strict budget, and though i hate to do this i do admit that creating a "backup" from a friends disc is often the only way i can afford the movie myself. So i assume there's no way to do this by just swapping the numbers on 2 mpls files? Guess i'll have to talk to my friends then to see if someone does have a version with the bonus features. Don't know where my mate got this copy from but bonus features is one of the things i like about movies. Hell Bd's often carry more then dvd's, thats why i prefer bd's over dvd's.

Would you also so blatantly violate the rules at another forum that you frequent?
Perhaps you don't understand that the rules were created to protect the Doom9 Forum from being threatened with lawsuits and police raids of members/moderators homes in the middle of the night, such as happened to the Digital Video Forums...

Actually is very simple, some Fox rental discs are like that. Try going to "BDMV\JAR\99999" and look for the file named "config.xml" (you need to open it on notepad), then change "<Rental>Y</Rental>" to "<Rental>N</Rental>", save the file. IF the bonus material is on the disc (physically), you are now going to have the Retail edition. I bought a Blockbuster second hand disc of the A-Team (rental), and when doing my backup I realized that al the bonus material was on the disk, after doing some research I finally found that trick, so my backup has all the extras but my original Blu-ray does not!!!.

YOU my friend are a freakin genius. That trick worked, as said in my OP the bonus material WAS on the disc i just had no way of accessing it till now. Don't know where you found that trick and doesnt really matter. All that matters is that it worked and you're a lifesaver. Glad i hadn't burn't the backup yet. Something i now can do :) (ps freel free to pm me where you found that trick)

@Ch3vr0n no big secret really, since some MLPS files were referencing the hidden content I assumed that if the menus were made using java the key for finding a workaround was in the JAR folder, maybe a second set of files or something like that, then I found this "config.xml", the name was way too obvious, and the text inside even more, so after changing that single letter I was not expecting a lot, but turn out my suspicion was right all along :D:p..
God bless the guys at Fox for been so obvious :o:o:o.

I hate to burst your bubble, especially since this shouldn't be discussed here - but that "solution" has been outdated for a couple of weeks now (Regarding some Fox and/or Universal releases). All you'll get now on your purchased previously viewed Blu-rays will be the full menu without the ability to actually access anything more than the movie-only...

I'll have to burst yours mate. I tested every single option in the new menu. All bonus features were accessible AND PLAYED!!! If it's outdated well, not for this disc apparantly.
I know my way arround html & php/sql (a little) but that's where it stops. Blu-ray coding is beyond me. And to please those earlier "piracy scarecrows", i was in the exact same place aq Squall. My video rental place (yes that's where i picked it up) often sells "rental only" copies of dvd's and blu-rays. This was one of em. I couldn't afford the ones at the music / dvd store and this one was just within budget. Now i'm thrilled that i have the same content as a retail one on my backup. If they create rental only versions, then why include all the same bonus features but lock you out. I was stuped to see a 41GB disc when the movie only took up about 27GB, BDRB could see the stuff but i couldn't access it. Bless fox for making such an easy solution for a "hard" problem.
Anyways. This topic can be locked/deleted, whatever a mod feels is suitable. My problem has been solved.

@Ch3vr0n
As the weeks go by, try to keep track of the original release dates of the previously viewed Fox and Universal Blu-rays that you acquire, starting with the beginning of December 2011...

If you can tell me a place where i can see such list i'll be happy to do just that. But whatya mean with "previously viewed"? Oh and i read that box a couple times, there was no suggestion to go "purchase the retail version", the menu was just stripped of my purchased rental copy but the extra's were physically on the disc and as such the above mentioned "trick" worked.

@Ch3vrOn
Essentially ALL new Blu-ray releases are initially made available for sale and rental. Subsequently, after a couple/few months, many of those discs that were available for rental also become available for sale as "Previously Viewed" (or Used).
Based on what I've been shown, you'll soon discover that the studios group (perhaps as members of AACS-LA) have now shifted their "hide and seek" focus to Universal Studios releases. By only changing the "Y" to "N" in the "99999.XML file, all you'll get now on your purchased previously viewed Blu-rays will be the full menu without the ability to actually access anything more than the movie-only - Some of these "Rental" discs do, however, offer something as a "replacement" for the stripped away stuff, if you've changed the "Y" to an "N" - a delightful onscreen (Not on the package) suggestion that, "if you want access to all things related to this Blu-ray title PURCHASE it"

good to know. I let BDRB always create iso's anyway with the testing of DTS-E and blanking. So i can test the backup before i burn it. If i were to encounter what you describe, ill just revert the change :). But for this disc the trick worked and i'm happy it did. If it hadn't well no big deal, im just glad it did :)

Actually it hasn't been limited to Fox releases. You'll find the identical file in the identical folder on many Universal releases. However, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, that "solution" has been outdated for a couple of weeks now (Regarding some Fox and/or Universal releases). All you'll get now, when you alter the "config.xml" file on your purchased previously viewed Blu-rays, will be the full menu without the ability to actually access anything more than the movie-only - in some cases even all languages (except the first audiostream) and all subtitles will be inaccessible (although in some cases they may be on the disc) - and if you try to access the menu functions, you'll be greeted by a polite advice that, if you want all of the features, purchase the disc (original sellthrough version, of course)...

well such an easy loophole couldn't have remained open for ever, thats why i build iso's before burning. If i were to encounter such a "greeting", it's a simple fix of reverting the change and rebuild the iso. No greeting and fully working (limited) menu

Making the described change to config.xml on the "Mr. Popper's Peguins" previously viewed version BD provides access to the extras on the disc, for those who care to try it. It works perfectly.

Maybe it could be implemented in BD-RB to check for it and have the flag changed if present?
