what are the advantages of converting dvd ac3 5.1 to DPL 1 or 2.

Probably none. Unless you have a surround sound system, some way of decoding it, and don't mind the fact that if you convert the audio to a format with a bitrate on the low side (128k MP3 for example) a lot of the surround information is probably going to be lost anyway.
Personally, I've never been a fan of surround sound. To me all that's achieved by having the sound surround you is to be constantly reminded the screen doesn't.

Actually only save space preserving some surround info.
Before the actual 5.1/7.1 amplifiers/receivers there was amplifiers with only analog stereo input (without digital input SPDIF/HDMI) than can extract four channels (FL, FR, C, S) from DPL 1 or five (FL, FR, C, LS, RS) from DPL 2.
