I had a discussion earlier today and realized that it's been a long time since the player thread has been updated, and its important that people know what players are compatible with backups. Since there are a lot of new players out, I though I'd start a new thread. Mainly I think it is good for people to know what players support BD-5/9 for movie-only, full backups, and whether full backups with BD-J work on DVD-9.

I think it's safe to assume that all players work with BD-25 backups, so there's no reason to mention them.

If you have a player that works with BD-5/9 -- please post your experience in the format shown below.

Thanks.

From the original thread it's probably worth making some generic statements in this thread until new information is supplied - personally I haven't seen any standalone which wouldn't work a year or more ago working with the newer versions.

In my experience, and the previous thread:

LGs only play bd5/9 without bd-j - fine on bd-25 - don't handle DTS-E properly.
Panasonics - don't play bd5/9 at all - fine with bd-25 and DTS-E
Samsungs - dedicated players handle everything correctly, but models with HDD have a silent DTS-E track.

My Panasonic DMP-BD65 plays my BD5 just fine

Edit to add:

Movie only BD5
Haven't tried the others

Are you talking about full disc as it would seem a bit of a squeeze? I'm not considering movie-only.

If you have a player that works with BD-5/9 -- please post your experience in the format shown below. More information please. I'd like for this thread to help people who are considering buying a player:

Sony DMP-BD65
- BD-5/9 movie-only - ??? (I would guess "yes")
- BD-5/9 full backup - ???
- BD-9 full backup w/BD-J - ???

Sony BDP-S360 (With NO firmware updates)
- BD-5/9 movie-only - yes
- BD-5/9 full backup - yes
- BD-9 full backup w/BD-J - yes

As you know, this player

1) Still has problems with BD-RB conversions that include DTSExpress

2) BD9 (and likely BD5) - Menu audio ceases after one loop (everything else remains functional)

3) Requires auxiliary memory, via USB thumbdrive, to properly play the BluRay version of "THX1138"

As long as you are collecting info on how players handle back-ups - maybe including whether the player handles DTS Express and whether it shuts down audio due to cinavia would be useful also? I'd suggest including what firmware level folks are basing their info on also.

I'd suggest including what firmware level folks are basing their info on also. That's a good idea. I still think the DTS Express playback issue on some players is due to something I've missed in the remuxing/update though. It's been a while since I looked at it -- maybe a fresh review will find something this time.

To make reference easier, I'm cutting/pasting any player info made (in the correct format) into the first post.

I updated the first post. I just did some testing and the Samsung BD-C5500 through one of its many firmware updates now plays BD-J on BD-9.

As far as I can tell, all of the Oppo Blu-ray players will play these discs. My Oppo BDP-80 plays them just fine. :)
