Specifically, the FX-8150 or the i2600K.

I've seen these benchmarks which put the 8150 nearly identical to the i2600K on 2nd pass:

However I mostly do CRF encoding, and am curious if anyone has experience with either of these CPU's and CRF. The AMD is $50-$80 cheaper so I am quite interested in it.

Of course then there's overclockability - could the i2600K be pushed to the point where it is worth the extra $?

The AMD might be cheaper upfront. But it will hit you in the pocket in the long run.

buy 2600k. it can be easly overclocked to 4.2 ghz . clock to clock intel is alot faster than buldozer.

$100 cheaper for 0.3GHz slower. Buy it instead of 2600. Also consumes 15W less.

This is Myth.
Consider your RIG encoding 24/7 whole 3 years, full time, on ~80% of CPU usage (FPUs will be iddle for example)
Consumption difference assuming 11 cent per KW/H will be:
0.03 * 24 * 365 * 3 * .8 * .11 = $69.3792 Long term

Get in consideration capitalized 18% interest (it is crisis now) - you pay Intel price now, but electricity over the period and will get ~$40-$45 more money for the AMD.

Price difference is more.

P.S.
But get the Intel. AMD is on par when running x264, but sux up to 2 times slower on everything else.

30 W difference sounds too small for default setups. All the benchmarks I've seen give FX-8150 systems ~75 W higher power usage than i7 2600K at full load.

edit: Also I going to hazard a guess that the 15w reduction in TDP is due to that processor not having inbuilt graphics core.

I'd say definitely go the Intel route. The E3 Xeon is compelling, just make sure you get a motherboard that has support for it. Sure, it fits into any LGA 1155 motherboard, but I'd be wary of buying unless I was 100% sure the firmware supported a Xeon CPU....
