CoreAVC is a commercial software product, developed by CoreCodec Inc.

As any company, they have to make money in order to pay their personnel and to aggregate profit.

That's why they sell CoreAVC licenses (and licenses for their other products) for money and cannot give them away for free.

So, to answer your question: Market economy (capitalism). It's as simple as that ;)

On the other hand, ffdshow and FFmpeg/libavcodec are free software projects, released under an OpenSource license (GPL).

They are developed and maintained by enthusiasts/idealists, in their free time...

As Lord pointed out, any player or codec even doesn't pay a licence fee to dolby or dts is free to be commercial according to the capitalist rules.

For the same reason PowerDVD, Pinaccle Studio and Microsoft Office can‘t be free while VLC, Openshot and LibreOffice can. They first ones are paid proprietary software, the second ones are open source software.
