View Full Version : On the use of matrices...

Hi,

So, this new B4 has that matrices tab in it. Great.

There's such a thing called "Angel 4:3 interlaced" matrix and I happen to have many 4:3 interlaced DVDs. Even greater.

Now what? I used to use SmartDeinterlace with acceptable results. Is this matrix of any use to me then?

If it is, is this how I use it: patch CCE with this matrix, select that matrix in the matrix tab. Encode (w/ SmartDeinterlace?). Repatch CCE next morning with another matrix if the next DVD is not interlaced....?

Sorry, if that's a stupid question but all the readmes of the patcher are in German  and I must say I haven't found a clear enough explanation on that subject in the DVD2SVCD documentation. :(

Many thanks to any help!

Try it and let the group know as your use is not mainstream. Be the pioneer :)

See Q&A #44 (I think). Assuming you are using cce 2.5 you do not have a matrix tab. Just use the patcher. If you are using 2.62 in safe mode you will use the matrix tab that will become visible when you set the file path to 2.62 (or 2.64 which is not recommended)and do not use the patcher. It is actually simple.

Edit: For future stoned birds :D

Q44: I sometime notice a Matrix tab in DVD2SVCD 1.0.6 B2 and higher. Sometimes it is not there. What give?
A: DVD2SVCD 1.0.6 B2 and higher automatically sense the version of CCE selected in the file path in the CCE tab. If D2S determines that CCE 2.62 or CCE 2.64 (not recommended)is selected it will add the matrix tab for your convenience (the label to the left of path line will continue to say "Cinema Craft Encoder 2.5"). If it determines CCE 2.5 is selected the matrix tab will not be present.
Note: To use any version of CCE except 2.50SP you must check the "safe mode VFAPI" checkbox in the CCE tab.

Q45: So, does Q44 mean I can't use a selectable matrix if I am using CCE 2.50 SP?
A: No. Actualy, you can. To select a matrix to be used by CCE 2.50SP you must use a version of the TSUNAMI patch utility (see Google) to patch the matrix into CCE 2.50SP. While D2S will not outwardly give any indication of this matrix patch, rest assured it will be used for the encoding and multiplexing phase of the D2S process.

What the... Am I seeing things...?

Yesterday evening I d/led and installed 106B4 and I saw a matrix tab before I hit the "Go" button for an encode. Today, I come back from work. Encode is over and there is NO matrix tab in the dvd2svcd gui... I've only used cce2.5 since the beggining. Errr... I'm properly mesmerized here...

Actually, I did try to play with cce yesterday and the patcher. Did that get the dvd2svcd software confused and it thought for a split second that it was legitimate to show me the matrix tab...? Whatever...

I understand now that for a user of 2.5, you have to patch it each time your vobs have different needs than the previous ones. Ok, good enough for me.

But still, the question remains: do I have to use a matrix that has "interlaced" in its name if I use SmartDeinterlace...?

Or has nobody actually have a clue as to what it does? A better question could be: where in the chain of process does SmartDeinterlace acts? If it present a deinterlaced source to cce, then cce doesn't need a better matrix for interlaced sources.

Plus I want my output to be progressive, not a "good-looking interlaced output"...

Well, I may try it tonight (if nobody comes back with a hint 'til then): no smartdeinterlace with a matrix that has "interlace" in its name.

Edit: Ok, now I read Q44 & 45 of the FAQ. Makes things a bit clearer in my mind. Still, I saw a mtrix tab. I did, I did. I saw it.. Yess, yesss... It's beatiful, it's full of stars... :p

I don't do windows or interlace, but I think you are getting a couple of things confused. It is my understanding that the interlaced matrix is just an encoding matrix designed to provide (maybe) a little more of a tuneup for doing an interlaced encode. I doubt it would do much anyway.

Why would you want to use an interlaced matrix if you are using smartD? SmartD acts on the video source before it gets to the encoder. So, as for as the encoder is concerned it is not getting interlaced source so a matrix of this type would not be appropriate anyway. I think you might want to forget about matrixes and just use the bilinear filter. It will clean up the small artifacts left by the SmartD.

Re: the matrix tab that did not exist...I want sum of dat stuff :)

That's what I meant when I said:

I had that figured out already. It's you who got confused over my confusion over something else... ;) Whatever... :p

Re: the matrix tab that did not exist...I want sum of dat stuff

I'll give you mine if yo give me yours! :D (But I swear to god, there *was* a matrix tab!)

Don't worry.

That Matrices tab comes and goes even when using CCE SP 2.50. It has happened to me and confused me a bit (v1.06b3 and 1.06b4). Luckily, I have had no need to use anything but the standard Matrix ever.

Yes it comes and vanishes just mysteriously;)

Really, give me some more data on that, as I cannot get it to come and go, except if I change CCE version.

For me, DVD2SVCD version 1.06b3 always shows Matrices tab.
Line from DVD2SVCD.ini :
"Matrice Preset=CCE 2.50 Standard"

DVD2SVCD version 1.06b4, show matrices tab once then it disappeared.
Line from DVD2SVCD.ini :
"Matrice Preset="

Like I said, I've always used the 2.50 standard and have never patched. I've never had a program crash and I am unlikely to patch in the future.

It's more just a curiosity.

Thanks for everything, DVD2SVCD

In light of this, can you have two versions of CCE installed at the same time? Suppose that I already have version 2.5 installed on the folder /CCE2.5 and now I install version 2.62 on the folder /CCE2.62. Will this new installation screw up my previous 2.5 install? Has anyone done this?

I'm asking because if you can have both installed at the same time I would only have to change the path in DVD2SVCD CCE's tab.

Yes I have v2.50 and v2.62. That's fine no trouble at all!!!
I don't use 2.62 very much since it's slow like hell...
(But it's nice to have it to test with matrice tab!)

Bye!

I have made plenty of tests with different "matrice" option...

I only used DVD NTSC as source (16:9, 4:3) but I want to
know, if matrice is merely for PAL Interlace sources?

Since I don't see very much change with matrice yet...
The best for me still "CCE 2.50 Standard" I'm wrong?

Thanks. Now I only have to figure out why CCE Lite 2.62 isn't working.

I think you need the full SP version not the Lite!

Go to the Yahoo DVDBACKUP group at ..
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DVDBACKUP

They have the TRIAL version of CCE SP 2.62 in the FILES section
