Telecide: TFM.TDecimate v. Telecide.Decimate

What is the general consensus (or opinion, if there is no consensus) about what the superior telecider is between these two (or any others not mentioned)?

I've been using the former with good results for years, but it seems to be the source of terrible instability in multithreading mode (even if it itself is under SetMTMode(5)) for HD material (75%+ crashes only to be fixed by turning off multithreading), while being quite stable, even in multithreading, for SD material.

So I am considering switching to another filter. Is Telecide.Decimate better/comparable in quality/speed? Will it run under a better MT mode? Will something else? Will traditional hand-drawn animation require something else?

tfm and tdecimate, no question.

It's by far the best automatic method for IVTC. Telecide and Decimate are from the (old and deprecated) decomb package. TIVTC outperforms it in just about every way.

I don't think that tfm/tdecimate thread particularly well anyway just due to the nature of how they work. Last I checked they weren't THAT slow even on HD material.

I'm not sure we are supposed to be discussing what is "best," given the forum rules. I think you will find that tfm/tdecimate does many good things and is what I often use. However, it really depends entirely on what you are trying to do, and therefore your question is impossible to answer.

As to instability of TFM/TDecimate when trying to multi-thread with SetMTMode, this is well-documented, but is hardly a unique problem to this particular plugin. Bottom line: if you are using TFM/TDecimate, don't use SetMTMode!

There's an exception to every rule and this is probably one of them. I cannot think of any case where Decomb would be preferable over TIVTC for automatic IVTC and the likes, so due to a lack of any alternatives TIVTC is the best.

I'm closing this one for several reasons. One is that the authors of both IVTCs are valued members here. Another is the point that johnmeyer brought up - that 'preferred' is a little too close to 'best'. And the third is for what I consider to be a gratuitous and nonsensical insult, "Telecide and Decimate are from the (old and deprecated) decomb package", and because the person saying it promotes a competing site in his sig and can hardly be considered an impartial observer.
