PC-Features for Video-Encoding

Hi there,

I want to buy a new PC and my question is if there are features e.g. of CPU, GPU or mainboard wich are useable for x264 (or other h264 encoders)?

At this moment I want to buy:
Intel Core i5-2500
Sapphire Radeon HD 6850
ASUS P8H67

All that matters is the CPU (in most cases). High clock speed, and a lot of cores. An i7 2600k is about as good as you can get on the desktop without being ridiculous.

I would also recommend to get a decent NVidia card. Not for GPU encoding, but to keep your system ready for GPU decoding (e.g. via DGDecNV (http://neuron2.net/dgdecnv/dgdecnv.html)).

You don't need a "high end" card, because the video engine usually is the same on all models. Sometimes "low end" cards even have a never incarnation of the video engine.

Oh, and don't be parsimonious with RAM, because RAM is cheap these days. While HDD's absolutely are not, so you hopefully still have some in the locker ;)

Yes, this I know, but till now I'm happy with ffindex. And the current ATI GPUs are cheaper for the same performance.

This I noticed too. But I think 8GB is enough for this configuration.

A tiny remark: using LAV video filters and graph studio, one can still offload the cpu decoding work to the ATI gpu as long as it supports DXVA. Just be extra careful about the color output settings of LAV video filter.

Also in any case DXVA is worthless.
