View Full Version : Burniing dvd on cd disks

I have a small promo that I made into a dvd file. When I saved the project to file I had a option to save as 700MB cd file.

When I burn it on a cd-r it is jumpy and losing sync. I reduced the burn speed to 2x and still jumpy and breaking up.

I tried burning on a DVD-R and it works flawless.

I thought I could burn or read somewhere that it was possible to burn DVD files on a CD-R.

Am I missing something?

It depends a lot on:

a) the peak bitrates of the encoded video ;

b) the peak/maximum bitrates that the firmware of your SAP was designed to accept from a VIDEO_TS recorded on CD media ;

My very-old LG DVD-player, for example, can happily spin a CD @ 8X http://forum.doom9.org/images/icons/icon3.gif

All kind of new words being thrown at me.

When I saved it to disk I used the parameters in my recording program that I thought was for a cd-r 700Mb drive.

The program I was using is DVD FLICK.

Could my recording a 2x be the issue?

Burning a DVD structure to a CD blank sounds appealing at first glance, but this is in no way a standard format.

See here:

and here:

Considering the (almost nonexistent) difference in price between a CD blank and a DVD blank it does not make much sense IMO.

Thanks for the links. Your last comment:

"Considering the (almost nonexistent) difference in price between a CD blank and a DVD blank it does not make much sense IMO."

Really made me think how true it is. I was considering using the CD's due to cost but when you think of what you said it isnt worth the hassel of trying to get it to work.

Thanks again;)

I had the same idea a few years ago when CD blanks were cheaper than DVD media, but no standalone I tried could play these miniDVDs. BTW They played perfectly on PC.

I put a BD program on a CD once, for grins, and it played fine on my Sony standalone (it was a suitable bitrate). No reason to use CDs tho given the cost of DVD/BD blanks these days.

Because the FW prevented this (not on purpose). It was cheaper to program a FW that selected the type of the video/audio according to the medium inside.

However, the BDplayers were designed from the beginning to support blu-ray data (a subset thereof called AVCHD) on DVDR, as a cheap alternative for camcorder users (otherwise the camcorder sales would have been very low).

Yes. IIRC those discs were shown as "CD" in my SAP.

Yep. The reason most older players didn't support it is simply because they didn't even look for DVD files on a CD. I had one of the earlier players which did support it, but due to bitrate limitations imposed by low CD read speed, I was underwhelmed. Shortly after I started experimenting with it, DVD prices dropped low enough that it wasn't worth bothering with.

Indeed.
Unlike the BD-5/9, that could hold say 1 hour, maybe 2, of a good quality material (HD camcorder, backups of BDs), and could also provide enough bitrate, the CDRs/MiniDVDs couldn't accommodate more than 10-20 minutes of DVD, which was less than half of what the pending SVCD provided, and SVCD was way more compatible* than MiniDVD.

*various tricks have been used to increase this compatibility, for instance, repacking SVCD in VCD structures.

In my case, I only used MiniDVD for TV captures, so the quality was limited from the beginning. And I could get decent results from MiniDVD for pretty much all my caps of 30 minutes or less. The problem was the peak bitrate limitation of my player, which was about 4400-4500kbps If I'm remembering right. Even though a 42 minute telecined capture ended up with barely more frames than 30 minutes interlaced, those caps tended to suffer much more from the low peaks.

Had the peak bitrate from CDs (on my player) been 1500-2000kbps higher, it probably wouldn't have been an issue. But my interest was more in teaching myself about DVD than the actual final product so I had something of a bias against SVCD. Also, I didn't have to worry about compatibility with other players since I only had one and didn't ever need to play my discs on another machine.

In any case, it seems like a moot point with DVD media as cheap as it is. Why worry about hardware compatibility when it's actually easier to avoid the question entirely?
