video editing software

I am looking for a good and cheap $$ or FREE video editing software. I have AVI, WMV and MOV files I wish to edit and make into a complete WMV file or a DVD file.

I gave up on windows Movie maker software as it just quit worikng and tells me that my project movie file was and cannot be saved.

I dont want to try movie maker again after spending 2 hrs making a project file and now I cant use it.

Anyone got a suggestion?

You could try Avidemux, but I don't know if it can handle .mov files.

I am a big fan of the VideoPad software by NCH (from down under). They do not link to the free version any more, so you have to download the trial version.

But it is easy to convert this into the free version: Uninstall the software, and you will see an option to disable the pro features and convert the app to the free version.

Much more powerful than Windows Movie Maker, pretty stable, and the price is unbeatable.

Unfortunately, your tip doesn't work here? No free-conversion option at uninstalling VideoPad.
Maybe I uninstalled it too quickly, before the 14 day trial expires...

for me it still does work. Just downloaded and installed the latest English version of VideoPad (2.41+), did one reboot and uninstalled it. I got this screen:

Looks like you made some mistake somewhere in the process...

You are right, they just made it quite difficult to find the free version on their site. From the main URL nchsoftware.com you will probably not find the link to the free version.

Thanks for your quick answers.

I just did a new test installing/uninstalling VideoPad 2.41, using my old vpsetup.exe

At uninstall, I has the same screen as you... but without the fourth option. Three lines only.
=> I see now that my vpsetup.exe version is the free version: v."2.41", not "2.41+"

Opening directly their English home page from France, I don't see "Get it free" ... but it's obvious on the same page when opened by the setarip_old's link, or from that post !

Another test: going directly on their French home page, no "Get it free", only a download link to a v."2.30FR+" (and no way to return to the English page).

Installing that "2.30FR+", a trial version is announced, and uninstalling offers the option to downgrade to the free version, OK.
But going to the French page from that post, we have a link "Télécharger gratuitement", translation of "Get it free", to obtain a free v."2.30FR" ;-))
