This is probably an old question here, and quite likely solved by now.

What players should I use to run within Windows 7-64?

Today I tried running Subtitle Workshop and it does now play the video as it should. Certainly a codec question.

But I do not wish to mess things up. How should I proceed?

My reply might be late, but I'm using MPC-HC x64 and ffdshow tryouts x64 (for audio mainly). Everything works fine, but Real Media only works thru WMP. Do you require Directshow filters for non-playback applications?
