View Full Version : Movie doesn't play smoothly

Hi
I've a problem, when playing HD movies (720p, 1080p).
In scenes that the camera moves in the background it looks like the movie doesn't play smoothly, falter.
It even hurts the eyes.

I'm using MPC-HC + LAV filters (splitter+video+audio).
My OS is Win 7. My HW - I5-2400. TV - Philips 42'' 100Hz Lcd.

I will really appreciate your help
Thanks

I'm no expert on this but I see the same thing too at times, it depends a lot on the speed at which the camera is panning etc. Using both my PC and a standalone Bluray player connected to a 51" Plasma the result is the same. Now I know what to look for I can also see a similar judder playing video on my CRT monitor, but being a lot smaller it's not as noticeable.

Anyway, if you can match the refresh rate of the monitor to a multiple of the frame rate that can help a little, but it doesn't seem to cure the judder, just make it more even. For instance my PC is connected to the TV at 60Hz and I've remuxed the same video at different frame rates just to see what difference it makes. 30fps looks marginally smoother than 24fps, but it's still juddery. 60fsp looks perfectly smooth.

Unless someone comes along with a clever idea, I don't think there's a magic cure. Some TVs attempt to create "interpolated" frames to match the refresh rate, but I've not looked at any of them to see how successful they are.
Alternatively you can encode your video using a script to increase the frame rate. It also creates "interpolated" frames while encoding. I've experimented with it and it works very well, but of course you end up with larger files when adding extra frames.

There's an example on the page I linked to.

My standalone player has no problem playing the 60fps sample (well I had to remux it before it'd play it for some reason) so I've been toying with the idea of encoding at 60fps myself in the future. I'll have to do some more experimenting. Maybe even using the script to convert to 60fps while playing the video in real time, rather than encoding the video at 60fps? I wonder how fast a CPU you'd need.....

You may want to mention what renderer you use also, e.g. EVR, madVR, or whatever.

I'm guessing you don't use MadVR. Use that instead of EVR-CP.

Hi

I'm using MadVR.

I read somewhere that it might be because the refresh rate of the TV doesn't match the video refresh rate.
Someone suggest using reclock, so I'll give it a chance and I'll update the result.

Thank you all for the responses

I'd be wondering if the renderer used would really have much effect on the judder problem.

I'll be interested to see if reclock makes any difference. It didn't for me.

Reclock helped extremely with frame dropping/repeating/delays at least for me personally, good luck nonetheless.

Hi
Using reclock did synchronized perfectly the audio and video.
I'm not sure (yet) about the judder. The specific scenes didn't improved visually. I'll keep testing more videos.
Thank you
