Sorry if this is a daft question:

I need to convert some standard definition camcorder video.

Would I maintain the most quality by using a High Profile setting, or is that limited to HD video?

I'm thinking of using a Constant Quality of 20 at custom 704x396 resolution.

I have a lot a standard definition camcorder video (approx. 500GBs) which is handheld and has a lot of movement within the video (it's not static shot on a tripod). It is PAL 720x576/16:9.

I'm asking on a technical view, rather than a visual one, as I'm not convinced I can see any difference on a test I did.

Thanks.

High Profile is the best if your playback device can support it. Basically it means that x264 gets to turn on all the bells and whistles in the H.264 spec that give it more efficient encoding. That means lower file sizes for any target quality.
