View Full Version : Change a BD's default audiotrack?

I re-built Shawshank Redemption with BD-RB, but like numerous other Warner titles this disc defaults to a DD 640kbps and not the TrueHD track. I could mark on the disc "swith to track 2" or something but...ugly. :p
Is there some relatively simple way to re-mux the thing so it defaults to the TrueHD track? Like maybe re-ordering the A_AC3 in the .meta file for it?
:confused:

Not really. The default track is selected via commands or BD-J. It's possible to do it from within BD-RB by swapping PIDs, but I'm not sure it would be worth the time it might take.

Actually this was alot easier than we thought. I simply changed the names of the two audio files one-to-the-other, leaving the .meta file alone, and re-ran the project whereby it multiplexed the TrueHD audiotrack into the first position on playback.
The menu is wrong now, i.e. what was the 640 selection is now TrueHD and vice-versa, but that's not important to me--I just wanted it to play back with TrueHD without having to fiddle with my remote control.
It works!
I suspect there is a better way to do this with BDEdit, and I do know about the SetStream command, but I can't seem to penetrate that program using a commercial Blu-ray; the setstream commands all refer to GPRxxxx and I dunno what these refer to.

That's almost always a bad idea... when you do it that way the MPLS doesn't get changed -- so the True HD is flagged as AC3 while the AC3 is flagged as True HD. I'd suggest you use BDEdit to fix it after you do that.

Hmmm OK well I just burned it, so will have to test it to see what my Blu-ray player thinks about it (I assume when you say "flagged wrong" that it could confuse a player).
I find BDEdit to be almost completely impenetrable! :o

Man, when you're right, you're right! ;)
My Sony BD player not only didn't report the correct audio stream (using "Display"), it didn't wouldn't even decode (play) any sound, out of either Track 1 or Track 2. The Director's commentary that I hadn't touched played fine.
Oh, well. Cost me just a buck (a BD-R) to learn this lesson. In addition, once again I observe that Arcsoft TMT 3 and 5 both played the BDMV just fine--so they were no test at all of how a settop player would react. :eek:
I suppose I will look-in the "Feature Request" thread to see if it's already there, but it'd be nice in the future to have a "change default audio" somewhere. Or maybe someone will make a tutorial on using BDEdit--I can easily tweak SetStream with my own simple tsMuxeR BDs, but commercial discs are too complicated for me... :o

@laserfan;
I am not sure if this will work, and you have already found that TMT 3 is not the best choice for testing. :p
If you open either the original Blu-ray or the BD-RB reencoded one with multiAVCHD in Re-Author mode, then go to the title that you want to swap the audio files, remove the audio files and then add external audio in the order you prefer and then let multiAVCHD rebuild it. I have done this before and it does work.
But what I am not sure is if it will change the .mpls to reflect the true, correct type of audio you add externally!
Definately test with BD-RE. ;)

multiAVCHD in Re-Author mode
Thanks for that idea Caps, maybe I will try it!
BD-RE, what a concept. I might have to buy one or two of those! :)

At about $1.00 per BD-R, and $10.00 for a BD-RE, plus the extra time to burn and test ( at max. 2.3x for BD-RE ), I usually only use them when I am real skeptical! :)
Or if I am suggesting to someone else to try something. :D
I have successfully used this feature with multiAVCHD on discs with PiP that I make into BD5/9 full movie backups. My Sony S360 will not play the main features audio on such backups. It is there, but only silence on playback. However, after running it through multiAVCHD, removing the audio listed and then adding it back as external audio, letting mAVCHD rebuild it ( The PiP will be removed by mAVCHD though! ) the results are a complete full backup with working audio!
Note: This method does not work with multi-m2ts movies though. :(

This method does not work with multi-m2ts movies though.Further, it occurs to me that I've made with BD-RB a full disc backup, with menus and extras, and I'm pretty sure mAVCHD works for "movie-only".
I suppose I will look at BDEdit again and see if I can make any sense of it. :(

Not true, in Re-Author mode it will rebuild the complete full disc backup just like the original, with the menus and extras.
I have done many this way! ;)
Make sure that after you load mAVCHD that you select the top button, second option - "AVCHD/BDMV/DVD Folders. It will then ask you " You are importing Blu-ray disc contents, do you want to switch to Blu-ray re-author mode? Of course say Yes.
It may then tell you if the disc is BD-J authored and or ask if the intent is to play back on a PS3 USB HDD, which I always say No and proceed.
I use mAVCHD to blank warnings and extras too, and am quite impressed that it keeps the original structure quite well.
I know you have mentioned in the past that mAVCHD is a bit challenging to use, but for this feature I use it quite often. :cool:
Now I will be trying out the new blanking feature of BD-RB, but mAVCHD has not failed me even once when used this way!

Well, they say you learn something every day--and I did not realize this!
I've opened it up and it looks real easy; in fact, I see there are buttons on the right that allow me to just move the audio Up on the list of audiotracks. I'll try that instead of removing and re-adding as external just for another data point.
Thanks again for taking an interest--I don't rebuild BDs very often but so long as I was doing this one anyway I may as well do it right! :)

Well, somehow it missed a subtitle in my first attempt, but the 2nd went perfectly afaict and everything works. Not only did the simple "Up" direction for the audiotrack put the TrueHD to position 1 on playback, but while I was in there (mAVCHD) I also:
1. Fixed all the chapter stops which somehow BD-RB had a frame too early, and
2. Removed all the non-English audio & subtitle tracks. Now I only have the three Eng audios & 2 Eng subs.
Thanks again Caps; any time I can learn something new for $2 bucks, I think I got a bargain... ;)

Excellent! And, at your expense, :p , I now have learned this too. :D
Plenty of experience and good info here at Doom9, and I keep learning new tips as well.
Glad to share. :cool:

At about $1.00 per BD-R:
What brand of "reliable" bd-r media can you buy for $1.00 ?
I've been using Verbatim and the lowest I get then is when Newegg has them on sale @ $1.49 ea.

Reliable will only tell with time! :p
I find Memorex labeled Ritek-BR2-00, 15 pack spindle for $14.99. ;)

They are rated at 4x, but my LG BH12LS35 burns them at 8x. :)
I usually find them on sale at Fry's every few weeks, prices can vary though. :cool:

@rapscallion
I've had great initial success with Optical Quantum brand - both 25Gb and 50Gb - check daily NewEgg and Amazon. Rated 4x burn on package, IMGBurn says good at 8X and they have been for me.
Right now the 25Gb are 80 cents each at NewEgg:

When I right click on an audio track in the steam list, I am given the option to "Set as Default." Does this not accomplish setting which audio track is defaulted on??

I only use BD Rebuilder. It is there, and has been ever since I can remember. But, as I just tested, it is not available in Full Backup. As I only do movie only backups...I did not know it was not available in other modes.

@CV91913
And I do "Full Disc" backups exclusively, so that I've never noticed that option. I guess that makes us even ;>}
My apologies.
However, I believe the only reason it's so simple when doing a "movie-only" is because there is no menu to contend with. After all you can build a "movie-only" (with no compression or using an already compressed "Full Disc") using only tsMuxer in just a couple of simple steps (Select videostream, select audiostream (or audiostreams in desired sequence)...

I didn't know this either...! But then the few times I've used BD-RB it's been for complete movie-with-menus.
