I'm currently trying to demux a bluray that contains a DTS-HD MA track with a DTS-ES core. I've read recently that there are problems when working with DTS-ES tracks if you don't have a decoder installed that works properly you'll hear popping/hissing when replaying the track.

My goal is to demux using eac3to keeping the entire DTS-HD MA stream and then muxing the video and HD audio into an .mkv. Then during playback I plan to bitstream the HD audio to my receiver.

I'm wondering if there is actually any processing happening when I demux the bluray -> elementary streams that would require a specific decoder. My understanding was that demux'ing w/ eac3to does not change anything about the audio stream (IE no decoding) and that what you had on the Bluray is what you'd have once you mux it back into an .mkv

If you want only demux you don't need a decoder.
eac3to can extract the DTS-MA.

So to clarify, when Demuxing, eac3to does not alter the audio streams at all?

Only to correct delays, gaps/overlaps or DialogNormalization, without decode/recode.
