View Full Version : Convert 2 movies on one DVD9 to 2x DVD5

I have DVD-Rebuilder Pro and this 7.76 GB DVD9 with 2 movies on it. I'd like to convert this (if at all possible) to 2x DVD5 so to avoid loss of quality.
Is this possible?
If so, some tips on how...
TIA

Is your source material a commercial DVD with a menu, or is it simply a DVD disc with two sets of movie .VOBs, .IFOs, .BUPs?

There is a menu to pick the movie from, so maybe...(?) it would be better to have the menu on the 2nd DVD as well?

With all due respect(!) and really I dont want to criticise DVD Rebuilder at all, but I am unfamiliar with this. DVD9->DVD5, fine. Splitting DVD9->2x DVD5, some apps can do that as well, but splitting 2 movies on 1 DVD9 to 2xDVD5...
Can I use DVD-Rebuilder for this?
Maybe it is a feature that is not available...
(again, I donot mean to criticise..)
Thanks

Yes, you can do that with DVD RB.
Simply open the preview editor after prepare phase (in 3 click mode!) and blank the cells that belong to movie 2. Do the encode and rebuild it. After finishing you would repeat that procedure for movie 1. I would load the DVD with PGCEdit afterwards to rebuild the time maps because obviously both main titles belong to the same video title set (VTS01).
But I guess there's no need for a reencode if you just leave one movie so there's no need for RB...unless you want to use filters. But that is your decision.
I would only use VobBlanker and/or PGCEdit for this.

DVD Shrink?
Use it's re-author function.
If both movies are separate titles it's easy to re-author them to a new disc one title at a time. It's a simple drag and drop operation.
If they're both one title, you can drag/drop the same title twice, while editing out the second movie the first time and the first movie the second time (DVD Shrink has a basic function for trimming the start and end points.
You'll lose the original DVD menus, but that's usually a good thing. DVD Shrink has a quick (normal) mode for shrinking to DVD-5 size when saving the output, or it's got a deeper analysis mode, which is basically 2 pass encoding.
PS. If the movie will already fit on a DVD-5, DVD Shrink won't re-encode it.

Thanks for the above!
The PGCEdit and VobBlanker things, being a non-expert, they is pretty vague for me.
To avoid this, if I create two DVD's, without a menu (there is hardly anything on the menu: one can select which movie only, that's it) then in fact I cud select movie only I guess.
Maybe the PGCedit/VobBlanker is not necessary then ?
Thanks again!

DVD Shrink?
Thanks!
I'll definitely keep this in mind when it does not work out with DVD Rebuilder.

Tab Input shows 1 VIDEO TITLE 01 (7.514MB)
Maybe that is the reason ... ??

I'm not sure what you mean by tab input.
The two movies together look like they should total about 7.5GB
If you play the original DVD with something like MPC-HC, when you play each movie it should display the DVD title number which is playing. Are the two movies two different titles.
I know the right DVD Shrink pane has tabs, but I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "preview" and "input" tabs?
Maybe post a screen shot if you can.

@mrwul Just make a DVD9 backup copy...
That's what I do when I'm concerned about loss of quality (because of exceptionally large content).

Hello again,
Sorry for the confusion as far as 'Tabs' is concerned.
I meant the below

Also sorry for the confusion as far as 'Prepare' Phase is concerned. I've never used it before and had something differently in mind (ahum). I assumed it involved all that has to do with the setup, selections (such as movie only, etc)
So, when thóse things were set up, then everything was 'prepared' for the next step. Had to go fairly deep in the help-file to discover I shd use the '3 click mode'.
@ggtop: yeah, yeah ... you told me so!! :stupid:
Anyway, after the prepare phase I have below results

As you surely have noticed, I am no expert on this. Preferrably I wish to stay away from even more 'expert tools'
(not familiar with Vobblanker and PCGEdit).
Sofar did not try DVDShrink.
I tried DVDFab split DVD9->DVD5. The split was done in less than a minute, but the 2nd DVD did not run. MPC-HC did not get any further than just the menu, i.e. clicking on the movie title did not work, so I left that.
Thanks in advance for any further advice.

p.s. oops, sorry for the big screenprints.

@mrwul
Is there a reason you have not responded to my suggestion to simply make a DVD9 backup copy of your original DVD?

DVDFab did the job.
Thanks to all for their input.
