any idea what kind of encoding % increase i can expect when upgrading from a 900mhz thunderbird to an athlon xp 1700+ ?

Hey UHT, it all depends on what programs you're going to use as the Athlon XP has the SMID extensions.... yummie :D. Expect a lot, around realtime fps encoding for a 1CD SBC movie). I want one now!!!

just upgraded from an 1ghz tbird to an xp 1800 and its around twice as fast.

Zhnujm (could you get a more difficult username?) may be right. However, it's naive to think cpu speed is all that counts. Of course you know this, but i think it pays more to emphasize on which motherboard to get, how much ram, which OS, stuff like that.
Choosing a cpu is easy, which power supply and fans to buy is more interesting...

oh yes, i also upgraded from kt133a sdram to kt266a ddr sdram to get this difference.

Well I was using flask back when i had my trusty durron 900 (probably the equivalent of your athlon 700) and i was getting around 8-10fps. I upgraded to a Athlon 1.4 nonXP CPU and overclocked it to 1.6Ghz and when i use flask now (not that often) i get around 15-16fps.
If you're into overclocking get a low speed XP and a good heatsink and it'l save you some cash. Unlocking the XPs are pretty involved though. Tape and superglue and silver paint.

dont think i will bother overclocking it, my machine runs pretty much silent but doesnt shift much air so i dont really have the cooling
