Considering the advanced audio codecs being discussed here, I'm almost embarrassed to ask about old, low-tech audio recording techniques, but here goes: I've acquired a couple of DVDs containing several World War II era Movietone newsreels. Two of them have some pretty severe crackling & pops in the background. Anybody have any suggestions as to a good way to eliminate or at least reduce this?

I just need to clean 'em up a little. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

You can try Audacity or other audio editors.

If you happen to have Nero, the Nero Wave Editor has a function for de-crackling and de-popping which works quite well.

Or try Wavosaur. If it doesn't come with de-crackling abilities "out of the box" there's more than likely to be a plugin for it. http://www.wavosaur.com/

@minaust

Ouch, say it isn't so!

You don't really want to sterilize those classic pieces of history, do you?
