I got this (http://www.multiupload.com/MQPC8L28ZQ) file and was wondering if there's a way to playback this with mplayer? (playback works fine ffplay and DirectShow based players)
Anyone got an idea?

Over here, yes, ffplay "swallows" that file finely. As for DirectShow, only if I use LAV Splitter AND the "native" MJPEG decompressor (read: quartz.dll). Mplayer refuses to play it though, BUT at least there is a good-reason — Motion JPEG in MP4 is "non-standard", and even when correctly-multiplexed, shall require an up-to-date demuxer, of course.

Stumbled over the file over at videohelp (http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/337772-Problem-converting-combined-motion-jpeg-and-mp4-audio-file-into-other-forma) and since I could play it with ffplay and convert it with ffmpeg I assumed mplayer could handle it too i.e. by calling -vfm ffmpeg but that didn't help either. :)

Update: by using XVI32.exe, I replaced the string "mp4v" with the string "mjpg", and now Mplayer understands it. So I think the video was not multiplexed in the right way (as a private stream), to begin with.

Nice that works! :) Good find, seems to be caused by the recording equipment used.

I think was just in an unusual rather than wrong way. Anyway it is fixed now in MPlayer SVN.

^ @ Reimar: so IYNSHO it's OK that only ffplay, Mplayer, and the LAV Splitter http://forum.videohelp.com/images/smilies/notworthy.gif support, let's say,
VC-1 in MP4? :)
