is it okay to crop to like 712, instead of the recommended
704? It seems to play fine on the players, but I remember
something about making it divible by 16, which 704 is and
712 is not... ???

sorry for my ignorance, I've downloaded divx for half a year
now, but just gotten into encoding my own stuff

also, how do you guys deinterlace with vdub.. the smart
deinterlace plugin, or are there other (better?) ways?

Depends on if you want to share or not ;) Most cards don't have problems with it, but some don't like these resoltions, especially when they try to pipe it out to a TV. If your just ripping for yourself, then choose whatever you like. If you are sharing and want to be as close to "universally compatible" as possible, then you better stick to the 16x resize rules.

Whoops, forgot this part :D . I never deinterlace unless I absolutely have to. I manually IVTC almost everything in TMPGEnc. If you *must* deinterlace, then Graft's Smart Deinterlace works very well. His Decomb package does a good job of IVTC for an automatic mehtod, and the postprocessing incorparates smart deinterlacing to clean up any stray frames. The auto IVTC in Aviutl works great too, but it is SLOW!!!
