How do I create the perfect anamorphic video?

Today I tried a mkv file from an anamorphic DVD that I made years ago on my standalone player.
I was amazed it didn't play the file.

The file is 768x576 (maybe not anamorphic anymore?!?) and I stretched it using mkvmerge by changing the 768 to 1024.
If I don't do that the file plays fine, but the image is thin looking.

Is there another way to create a 16:9 file using an anamorphic source.
In MeGui I didn't change the resolution. I left it as it was.
Or is there an option in MeGui to keep the pixels anamorphic.

768x576 is an illegal MPEG-2 value for DVD. The largest width is 720, or 704.

No standalone DVD recorder, that followed the DVD specifcation, would ever create a 768x576 MPEG-2 file.

@Ghitulescu, I've an LG HRX570 and it can play anything up to 1920x1080.
It's a pretty good player, but usage is slow and it lacks a few features I'd like to have seen.

@MrVideo, you are right about the resolution. DVDs don't work with 768x576, Mostly seen in analog capture devices. Although I've read that it was indeed a PAL resolution used in the past for broadcasting. Could be wrong though.
Anyway, I'm not creating Mpeg-2 files. :)

When I encode a DVD VOB file 768x576 in MeGUI the resulting file is 768x400 when I encode with Handbrake and strict anamorphic setting I get a 1024x576 resolution.
How do I get the same resolution wih MeGUI?

1024x576 in not anamorphic, unless you're referring to the effective resolution after resizing. I assume when you referred to 768x? VOB files you meant 720x?
Anamorphic encoding uses the same resolution as the DVD, so for NTSC it's 720x480 and for PAL it's 720x576.
Of course that's before any copping takes place.

In MeGUI it's simply a matter of ticking the "clever anamorphic encoding" option in MeGUI's script creator to enable anamorphic encoding. Then you choose which anamorphic method to use.
If you're using MeGUI's one click encoder I can't help you there as I've never used it.
