Hallo,
i've created a (hopefully) bluray player compatible MP4 file running 2 hours. It would help to have chapters every 10mins for better seeking. The FAQ states MP4 doesn't support chapters directly (just by "user space" data - the Nero method) that will be parsed by splitters individually. I once had a mp4 file with chapters that came up as subtitles instead on some software players. I guess these were created by apple/quicktime software (they seem to do it differently).

1) What method is used by mp4box/megui muxer? The Nero one ("user space" data)?

2) How do standalone players (bluray players, TVs with USB stick input, PS3...) respond to this chapters? Do they work properly? I have none of these devices right here for testing.

I recommend 'mp4chaps' from the free and open source mp4v2 tools. http://code.google.com/p/mp4v2/. It can convert between Nero and Quicktime chapters (and creates both by default). I've created chapters (both from sources and at fixed length) for literally thousands of my DVDs and audiobooks using this tool and one format or the other has been recognized by almost all players I've tried (WD TV Live, iPhones, iPads, iTunes, VLC, and many more I must have forgotten). I suspect that any player which does not recognize mp4chaps tagged files, just doesn't support chapters in mp4s at all.

Thanks for that nice tool. In the meantime i have included chapters with MeGUI. Regarding MP4v2 they are Nero ones (and no quicktime available). I'll keep it that way because i know that some software splitters will take the quicktime ones as subtitles and that's annoying. Quicktime is iCrap stuff only anyway. No one jumped on that train in the windows or bluray world i guess...

The XBox360 takes the chapters properly (somewhat shifted though) and Potplayer (x86) as well (with own splitter). Looks good so far...
