View Full Version : watching DiVX on TV?

I encoded a divx movie which looks good on a monitor. I used "video out" to connect the computer to the TV. The quality of the video on the TV sucked. I used 640x480 resolution under control panel> display> Settings>, which is the same resolution as the divx movie. I have a cheap ATI AiW 4MB card. Does that have something to do with it?

1) If you watch divx movies on your TV, is the quality of the video good? Is it comparable to that of the monitor or DVD?

thanks

Playing a dvd/divx will never look as good on a traditional TV as it will on a monitor mainly because a monitors have progressive displays where as a TV's are inerlaced thus you lose clarity etc.

However I am perfectly happy the tv-out quality of my tnt2 ultra video card though s-video connections. So basically if you're encoding your divx movies properly you shouldn't be able to notice much difference between the dvd playing and your ripped divx when viewed though a TV.

Note try bumping up the res to 800x600 when in tv-out mode, may make it look better then again might not.

A friend of mine has an ATI Rage VE connected to a 100Hz TV with an SVHS cable - when you set the contrast and brightness of the TV right, it is a really nice picture! Not like a highend DVD player, but somewhat like one of the cheap Taiwanese DVD players.

This depends very much on the graphics adapter - I tried the same with a Geforce 2mx and found the TV picture was crappy. The ATI Rage chips seem to do a great job however.

In your case, I guess a new graphics adapter would help a lot (ATI is great in that respect, but a new card with at least 32MB memory and a RAGE chipset will make a lot of difference)

My opinion is that the tv out ussually or allways looks better than looking on a monitor because the imperfections that is in the video is more difficult to see on the tv screen than it is on a super sharp monitor.
But if the tv out chip does not do its job good it will look like crap. I have a geforce 2 mx200 with a bt chip dont remember the chip name think it is bt868 or something like that.
and I have tried many graphic boards with tv out beside the radeon but I have tried the older AIW cards and other chips on geforce cards and I find the bt chip with tvtool to give the best results.

the only video format I have tried that actually is looking better on the monitor than the tv is dvd not any other compressed format than dvd is good enough or if you encode everything at highest Q level of 2 then it looks better on monitor.

Hope this helps you to deside anything

i tend to agree with kandor.. the fact that the picture is a little bit blurry on (my) tv is pretty helpful for some divx-movies (smoother picture). i use an old gefoce256 gpu..

I can attest to the early AIW's tv-out looking terrible. I was using a AIW 128 16mb for awhile and the PQ was horrible at 640 x 480, and bearable at 800 x 600. Colow was a little washed out also, no matter what I did in powerstrip (which is something I highly recommend for you if you must use that card).

I have a gf3 ti200 w/TV-out (using tv-tool) and the PQ is pretty darn good. I would recommend getting a radeon or a geforce based card w/Tv-tool.

Hope this helps a little.

(BTW, this is my 1st post. I've lurked here for awhile and I love this forum.)
