I've got these on NTSC DVDs that shows a pattern of five combed frames with one progressive. Other times it looks like a normal 3:2 pattern.

I tried TFM/TDecimate two pass and I ended up with tons of blended frames.

If needed I can up a clip to my web server.

This is mainly an academic question as the region 2 DVDs (which I also have) are straight forward conversions from 24fps. So I'm just slowing those down.

AFAICT they totally borked the Region 1 mastering. But I've not done a lot of anime, so it could be inexperience on my part so I'm just pinging folks who may be more knowlegeable...I'd like to understand what's going on here...

A clip is pretty much mandatory in order to answer. I'm working on a script that much better handles a situation described a few weeks ago, and which I've now run into myself, where instead of standard pulldown -- where one field in every four is repeated, yield five fields instead of four -- that fifth field is synthesized. This was discussed here:

Unfortunately, some of the transfers I am dealing with have more than one blended field in some frames, so there is no way to perfectly recover the original field. I would need to see a few seconds -- preferably a scene with lots of motion -- to see if you have the same problem, or if it is something else.
