I found somewhere that new MPEG4 supports the following functionalities:

Object-based video coding
* Binary shape coding
* α-map shape coding
* Padding for block-based DCT of texture
* Shape-adaptive DCT
DWT for still texture coding
Mesh animation, face and body animation

Could somebody explain to me each of these functionalities and tell how widely these functionalities are imlemented in reality?

afaik there's no implementation that includes 'Object-based video coding'

What do you mean with "new" MPEG-4? Or more precisely, what part of MPEG-4 you are referring to?

MPEG-4 is a quite huge standard, which includes "Part-2: Visual" (known for it's "Advanced Simple Profile", as implemented by DivX/Xvid) as well as "Part-10: Advanced Video Coding" (better known as "H.264").

It also includes "Part-3: Audio" (e.g. Advanced Audio Coding) and "Part-14: MPEG-4 File Format" (i.e. the MP4 container). None of these are very "new" at this time though...

In my opinion only Advanced Simple Profile is moderately used in video broadcasting. Due to problems in HW implementation no_of_sprite_warping_points is restricted to 1 or 0 (GMC mode).

As far as I know, ASP is never used in broadcasting. AVC is quite commonly used these days though.

You are right. For example DVB does not support MPEG4 (as far as I know).
I incorrectly interpreted the notion 'broadcasting'. I included also Internet streaming in addition to satellite and cable video broadcasting.

DVB-S2 does support MPEG-4 AVC, as does DVB-T2 and DVB-C2 :)

No ASP though. The only widespread use of ASP these days is in piracy, as far as I know... Well, technically HDCAM-SR is a variant of MPEG-4 (Studio Profile), but that's kind of its own thing..

DVB-S2 does support MPEG-4 AVC, as does DVB-T2 and DVB-C2 :)

And even the older non-2 standards allow AVC, which is also used in many countries for both SD and HD broadcasts.

yep, AVC here in DVB-T, dunno about DVB-C.
