View Full Version : Will reducing frame rate cause problems?

Hey people, I'm a newbie to video editing and have discovered that TDecimate can be used to reduce the frame rate by removing duplicate frames. I've tested this on my anime, and realised I only need a frame rate around 20 fps, and by doing this I seem to get smaller files.
Could there be later consequences for having non-standard frame rates, such as difficulties using movie-to-DVD conversion packages?

Welcome to the forum,
While most parts of anime series and movies are drawn at framerates lower than 24fps, I think you'll usually find sections of true 24fps (and even sometimes 30fps). Check a fast motion scene, or an opening song, or the end credits. By decimating the whole thing down to 20fps or 16fps or whatever, you'll almost certainly have sections that will play with more stutter, or more jerkily, than necessary.
Later consequences? I didn't quite catch the question. I'd be more concerned with the immediate consequences. But 20fps MPEG-2 video can be telecined, or have pulldown applied, for NTSC DVD. If you know what you're doing.

Depending on the format you're outputting to, you may be able to use the more advanced mode of TDecimate to have variable framerate, letting you cut out the duplicates without ruining high motion scenes. Of course this complicates issues like chapters and qpfiles, and only a couple containers will playback vfr correctly, but it's an option.

Thank you for your responses. Well I'm having fun playing around anyway, and learning new things about how video works.
MediaInfo doesn't say "Progressive" for my media source, but does after I've put it through x264. I'm assuming that if my source is already progressive, I can use decomb's vfw filters without needing to "telecide"? I don't really understand how interlaced video is processed.
I'm in the UK, so I guess I'd be using PAL. It seems odd that the NTSC creators chose to adjust the frame rate to 29.97 fps to avoid, from what I understand, was the sound signal disturbing the colour component of the video signal. I wonder how PAL and SECAM chose to deal with it.
