I'm using gknot and when I encode with AC3 audio the playback volume is really low. Any way to improve this?

Try out the DeDynamic filter in PowerDivX3.12. Or use it in BSPlayer.

i have a soundcard with a digital output which feeds an external dolby digital decoder. in such a case, pumping up the volume on the pc soundcard controls makes no sense. if you have a sound card with built-in dolby digital decoder, then you can check its volume settings.

or use dvdgenie to switch the intervideo ac3 decoder to "amplified". (if you use it)

deDynamic filter in PowerDicX 3.12 ( from either Doom9 or powerdivx.com ) wil allow you to amplify by 200% ( +6 dB ) ...
