Capture Problems

I want to use my TV Tuner to capture with Virtualdub 1.9.11 the 64 bit version. I am trying to capture from my satelite reciever with the composit Y,R,W plugs. I have been reading guides online but they all seem to be old or don't have the answere to the problems I am having.

1. when I capure the avi file there is no compression to the video or audio.

2. for NTSC I am using 720x480 29.97 fps and I want high quality. what should I be using for color YUY, I can't find one setting to work

3. when playing the file in VLC it tells me it doesn't support audion/video format CXF2

You could try also in virtualdub forum. cxf2 seems to be a proprietry format of your capture card. In this case you don't have a choice to set it to yuy etc. Is it a hardware compression card? In that case the raw format is actually mpeg2 (or maybe h264). You then can't set the compression format either. I have the same problem, my device only shows a green screen in the overlay, but I can see an image in preview but I can't record that. You can only use the software that comes with the card.
There may be something you can do with graphedit.

The highest quality one can achieve only by using a SAT-recorder, it can save the stream as MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, exactly as sent, without lossy A/D/A conversions (and codec changes).

The rest should be in the guides (there's nothing new in the sun for at least 5 years in this field, only newbies that don't read the stickies :) ), pay attention to your capture card. Nobody can help you since you haven't mention its model.

when I used the Sonic software to capture I got a mpg file that I would demux and author the DVD files to burn. I nolonger have the sonic/adaptec,/whatever they call themselves this week software. When I try and alter the codec it says not suported for color ect....

I downloaded a trial version of Nero and the capture works well and it compresses video/audio to a mpeg container.

I have many codecs, DivX, Procoder 3 codecs, Xvid, h264 installed.

Please advise further and I have read guides but can't seem to chage the settings that apply to codec or colour format.
