Tried few builds of x264 on win xp 64bit with 2x5680 Xeons, 24GB of RAM and x264 always crashes after indexing avi yuy2 uncompressed file.
Is it XP 64bit ?

I have been using Windows XP x64 for quite some time. And x264 worked flawlessly on that system :)
My system was a simple Core2 Quad though...

Does it crash using --demuxer lavf?

Don't know- it crashes after 422 to 420 scaling- when encoding should start.
Tried 32 and 64bit versions.
Will try on same machine, but Win7.
It was on my friend machine over TeamViewer.

Try limiting the number of threads? I got some nasty issues happening with default --threads auto on a 12 core box (with HT, so 24 logical cores == 36 threads). Granted, these nasty issues did not include crashes, just epic image quality fails when using CBR with a 1 second buffer.
Bummer. Hopefully you will find a solution!!

It works on my 12 core machine with Win7.
Done some encode using BD pressets and did not see any artefacts. It was 2pass VBR.
