If I capture at 640x480 and use virtualdub to crop, the video and audio get way out of sync.
If I capture at 320x240 and crop it comes out ok.
I have a choice between putting up with noise at the top of the screen or lower resolution. Is this a limitation of my system or is there a way around this problem?

ok well if the video is getting futher and futher out of sync with the audio then u might want to chage the DEFULT PROCESSING LEVEL of the divx codec from FULL to MIN.

By higher res. you have many dropped frames, and it causes desync.

Try to capture with mjpeg or huffyuv codec.

I have a 1.2 GHz Athlon with the same video card as you and I can capture 640x480 Huffyuy using AVI_IO with perfect sync. My hardware is not much different than yours so you should be able to do the same.
