View Full Version : TrueHD+ffdshow bitstream cuts in and out

I do not believe this is a result of the MKV container, but everything I play with a TrueHD stream contains a momentary blackout of sound when bitstreamed to my receiver.

It's very random, but always occurs at least twice in every 50 minute sample. I have read some other people complaining about similar issues, but nothing focuses specifically on this behavior as a chronic known issue with some sort of resolution.

I'm thinking at this point I need to avoid bitstreaming TrueHD, and convert everything to FLAC so that I'm sending PCM to my receiver. That's a MAJOR hassle and I'd rather find some sort of solution.

Would using Arcsoft's audio decoding filters help as an external filter for MPC-HC ? Is it really ffdshow's fault? Could it be the ATI driver (11.3 catalyst though it happened with every previous version).

Thanks.

The only way I could get reliable audio transport to my receiver was by using PCM audio channeled trough ASIO software that kept a constant exclusive connection to the HDMI audio device (on an ATi card). It was otherwise too slow when starting up, and had a hiccup with the largest PCM formats once every half hour or so. ASIO software isn't a solution for everyone, and there's of course the trouble with getting the DTS-HD formats to decode properly. I'm quite glad with the rich variety of processing modules (VST plugins). I've made an up-mixer that works better than the ones in my receiver, for example. (I use more plugins, but that's a bit out of the scope of this thread.)
I must say that I do convert items to flac + basic video remux, but I store my blu-rays in vacuum bags anyway. (I'm weird like that, yes.) I'm just quite fond of my extremely well-organized and labeled MKV/FLAC video and audio folders.

I just played some shows with plain dolby digital, and it too is cutting in and out. At this point it's not specific to an audio type, or at least it's not exclusive to TrueHD but rather bitstreaming. It's also reproducable at the exact same spot in each file whether I play the file in XBMC's default player or MPC-HC.

To me that means it's not related to the filters or players. The only common points are the ATI drivers, and the receiver unless I'm greatly simplifying the complexity of bitstreaming from a PC to a receiver via hdmi
