AFAIK in x264 there is no need to use custom matrices due to x264's features like Psy_RD, Psy_Trellis, AQ etc. that helps optimal grain distrubution and adaptative quantizing.

Also nevertheless, do you have any custom matrice suggestion to keep more fine image detail and naturel grain distrubution in x264 encodings (for movies) ?

Did you try "--tune film" yet? Or even "--tune grain" with enough bitrate?

--tune film => --deblock -1:-1 --psy-rd 1.0:0.15
--tune grain => --aq-strength 0.5 --no-dct-decimate --deadzone-inter 6 --deadzone-intra 6 --deblock -2:-2 --ipratio 1.1 --pbratio 1.1 --psy-rd 1.0:0.25 --qcomp 0.8

Also my answer is no. Because i prefer to use --deblock -3:-3 --aq strengh 1.2 or 1.10 in my encodes and i disable psy_trellis because it hurts movies noise spectrum and gives a grainy look. I tune all parameters seperately according to my pleasure.

My point is optimal bitrate distrubution, to avoid x264 turns blocks DCT blocks in dark and flat areas.
