Current status of Windows Media DRM

I don't use DRM content, but was wondering about the current situation with decrypting WM DRM files. Several years ago, there were tools like drmdbg/FairUse4WM and FreeMe2, which were updated as WM DRM evolved to counter attacks. However, suddenly all these tools seem to have dropped off the face of the Earth. Is there anything out there that can decrypt current WM DRM files? Maybe I'm not searching right, but everything I'm finding goes back years ago, which is puzzling.

It isn't even possible to decrypt the old stuff using the new player (T2 WMVHD).

Is there anything out there that can decrypt current WM DRM files?There is (paid for) software that "re-records" a drm file as it is playing i.e. it doesn't remove DRM from the original file. It creates a DRM free copy.
I think the quality is less than the original file.

The trouble is M$ has sued the only person who really had a good solution into hiding. Requiem for iTunes almost suffered the same fate. The creator now has a site on Tor to hide from the Apple God Complex.
So once again Big Money stifles creativity for and in the name of the Almighty Dollar.

Hm... that would at least explain why I found no cracks out there, but it's still weird that no one else has stepped up to the plate. I did hear some rumors that the protection is much better nowadays, not just from a legal standpoint.

No! the protection uses mostly the same old mechanisms every time an older idbox was cracked all they did was add a new layer of obfusification to make it harder to get the cSID/cPID's. The newer models of it use the same techniques. No one yet has produced a working decryption software that worked like Viodentia's fu4wm.

Because iTunes is more popular today anyway the use of programs like requiem are getting more attention. By the way Requiem 2.0 just showed up yesterday on Tor. It can't handle all HD, but works on all SD. The creator says that he is working on the next release to include HD. The one trouble is for HD you will need an iPad to backup with the keys in order to gain them. The newer Requiem uses the device backup to gain access to the keystore for decryption. This is so requiem doesn't break every time you update to the next release of iTunes.

Anyhow if you still wish to decrypt WM i suggest you start building. ATM there is no one willing to put their necks out to produce said software. If you feel your talents match this criteria. I suggest Tor as a way of publishing because of the legal aspects of such a software.

Oh yeah I also suggest that it be made fully open source. The reason is due in part because if its open its never truly dead.

If no one has made a working decryptor, then the interesting question is whether anyone actually tried. :) I suppose the first step would be to find some actual DRMed files.

There are plenty of online stores that Windows Media Player can be set up with. The ones that sell movies are the ones you want to head after because a great majority of the music you can buy now-a-day is undrmed.

Good old wmv/wma drm.
Back when i was on windows fairuse4wm was my friend.
Just wondering does using a virtualmachine with XP and an old version of windows media player with fairuse4wm still work?

Haven't tried. Cause mainly got tired of the WM BS. Its from the very start a very poor video/audio codec. I long sense used lamexp to convert all my wma's music to mp3 and killed my Napster account.

Now Micro$oft is killing off the ZuneHD Product line I don't see any future for the format.

Well fairuse4wm is very much alive. Http://undrm.info/ has all the information you need.
If you are running windows 7, you can use it on a virtual windows XP, it works like a charm!
