It's impossible to know what level tweaks to suggest without seeing the original video and then it all comes down to personal taste. The quality is also highly dependant on the source. DVDs can vary quite dramatically in quality. What was the source video used to encode your example? Which encoder was used in your example and which encoder are you using yourself (x264, XviD etc)? It's not uncommon to encode standard definition video using a HD source and this will usually produce a better quality encode than if the source was DVD. Sometimes only marginally, sometimes quite noticeably.

My objective is to produce an encode which looks as close to the original as possible. I figure if I want to change the colour levels, add sharpening etc I can do so on playback (although I generally use a PC for playing video) as then I can change my mind, but that's just my preference.

Your resize dimensions indicate you're not using anamorphic encoding. It really only applies to DVDs but if your source is DVD, anamorphic encoding will retain more detail. DVDs don't use square pixels so in order to resize and use square pixels (which you appear to be doing) you'll be resizing down and losing some detail.

Probably the best way to obtain advice from others regarding your encodes would be to post a screen shot taken from your source video along with the same screen shot taken from your encoded video. Then others can make "this is what I'd do" comments but unless you're doing something obviously "wrong" which is adversely effecting the quality, it really comes down to personal preference. Me, I tend to use the Lanczos (Sharp) resize filter..... personal preference.

It also indicates he has no idea what he's doing since his resolution AR is 2.52:1, a ratio no movie today has, and since he's resizing in Mod2. The pic he posted is from someone that used a more normal Mod16 resolution at 2.37:1.
Probably the best way to obtain advice from others regarding your encodes would be to post a screen shot taken from your source video along with the same screen shot taken from your encoded video.
Even better might be to post an untouched sample from the source. Since it's Indian (I think), it may have field-blending or other serious problems

I did wonder about that. Also the fact he's using MeGUI which as far as I know will only do mod16 resizing when encoding using square pixels so I assume he must be modifying the script it creates.
