TMPEnc VMW5 and x264: slow or not?

Hello everyone!

Currently I'm playing with the VMW5 (trial). It's really cool compared to other commercial converters. You get more freedom and other blabla.
And it uses x264.
My PC:
Q6600 (2,4 GHz), HD4850, Win7 x64 SP1.

Source is a 18 secs long Blu-ray sample. Target: 720p Main@3.1 (CABAC), CBR (4 MBit/s).
It takes ~1 minute to encode this video. A bit too long, ins't it?

PS:
Compared to other commercial software VMW5 is IMO perfect to convert videos for my iPhone 4.

I believe that x264 is broken in TMPGEnc. No idea why, but it's hugely slower than vanilla x264cli according to my tests.

Yes- there is something wrong (speed wise) in x264 implementation in TMPEG.

Seriously. Could it be that x264 was slowed down *intentionally*? After all, a good part of the advertising roll is touting the oh-so-fast GPU encoder. Now, the insiders know that efficient GPU encoding is not self-evident but rather problematic, and that x264 driven by prevailing Quadcores delivers a better quality/speed ratio than any available GPU encoder. (At least that's my level of information, I don't know about 5-digit $$$$$ professional software packages.)

You don't need any "bugs" to slow down x264. Simply disable a few or all CPU optimisations, and x264 will be pretty slow. And in that state, it's a nice counterpart to the oh-so-fast GPU encoder, and to the Quicksync encoder just as well - no matter if driven by SB (quicky) or running "generic" (slohooow).

I don't want to force a conspiration theory. But somehow, it would really fit in the picture.

Considering QuickSync took a similar speed hit when I gave the trial a spin (compared to the QuickSync implementation in other programs), I don't think so.
